Solved Windows 8.1 Start Screen Freezing

I have two Windows 8 installs, one on my desktop HDD, and another on my laptop's. My laptop broke, so i took the HDD and hooked it up to the extra SATA on my desktop for extra storage. For one reason or another, my desktop install decided to stop working, and I couldn't find the disk I used to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 so I could refresh/restore it. I went to boot to my laptop install to use it for a while (as safe mode wouldnt work on my desktop install anyways) and that worked for a few days, but now the start screen freezes and I have to open task manager and move it to my other screen with Win+Shift+left, and end explorer.exe. Of course, since that doesnt work, I cant use the create a recovery disc utility. I need some help (today if possible) ASAP, because we're about to go on a trip, and I want to have my ipod working (itunes is broken on my laptop install, and my ipod classic's firmware needs to be reloaded). Thanks in advance!

I think you issue started because the laptop drive had windows on it your desktop tried to boot it up ,causing a conflict you desktop windows 8 .did you try hit f12 to get boot options on the desktop ,and choose the repair/restore ect ect ,oh yeah don't restore if you have data that needs backing up first .
check this tutorial ,'how to create a win8 repair disk' you will need a working computer to do this .a friend or family member with a working win8 computer perhaps

It does the same thing with the other drive removed. Its just the start screen freezing, like I can open it (but only after a few minutes after it starts) and I can (sometimes) open programs in the programs list under the arrow at the bottom, but anything else causes me to have to restart explorer.exe. however, I think the link you provided may be working, because I can open the run box, and it doesnt freeze.

/scannow doesnt work (says '/scannow' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file) and cmd /scannow just opens cmd again

Well, it magically started working again, could be the command, could be magic. I'll never know. Whatever.
