Renaming Shenanigans

Here we go again, another issue that shouldn't even be possible. If you have multiple video or image files in a folder and they have different formats, i.e wmv mov mpg try to rename them all to one name. Guess what... a huge jumbled mess. A whole bunch of files with the same name. Why would windows rename like this it never use to before? Its either a bad setting or a horrible idea by Microsoft please help me fix this if possible. thanks

Those file names are valid because they have different extensions (your extensions are hidden).

Search for "Folder Options" and under the "View" tab you can change the settings (uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types").

I see 5 a.jpeg in your second screen shoot, and other duplicate files. You can't have two files in the same folder with the same name?

I'm not sure what you want? You have duplicate file names with the same extension in the same folder. You can't have two ab.gif files in the same folder so they get numbered.

You are not understanding the problem correctly. It should not matter the file extension, if I have png's, gif or jpeg in a folder then rename them to one name, lets say happy, the order should be
happy (1)
happy (2)
happy (3) and so on, regardless of the file extension.. happy 1 png, happy 2 jpeg... there should be no duplicates. Now I am pretty sure this did not happen in windows xp or vista, which Is why I am posting for the 8 forums.

"Group by > Type"?
"Sort by > Type"?
Use a different file manager?
