windows program file association settings not working

I recently found many application would not save to correct type. Some software icons would come out to a blank or white block, but those software actually there. For example, realrecorder is running, it would come out a white block on taskbar on bottom. I tried use 'access and program default' in control panel, still not fix the issue. Ms word, and word pad also come out white blank icon.

Any suggestions ?

The "white paper icon" bug has been with Windows as long as I can remember. But try this first:

Always a good idea to make a Restore Point before any changes. Most of the time that will get you back where you started if the change has a bad side effect.

I tried reset default to Microsoft windows and system restore, still not good.

If you double click does it open the correct program?

yes. The programs open but just show a white empty icon like :note: most significant problem happen to office and pdf files. they show a white empty icon but file property show it is word file, when I click on it, it would open it ms word, same with pdf. Desktop shortcut has same problem, the program is installed, but broken icon, when I click on it, it open.

I don't know what to suggest. On Windows 7 I used 7Stacks Taskbar launcher. I don't think it had anything to do with 7Stacks but I was depending on the icons to select the program to launch. I had enough blank paper icons that I created a folder under Documents just to put custom icons. Then I'd use the Change Icon in the shortcut.

I've seen this pop up in every Windows version. I have no idea why.
