    Is 8.1x64 slower than Win7x64?

I'm putting together a laptop with a Celeron 1.1ghz. I have 3GB memory, with option to go up to 8GB. I have an identicle laptop with win7x64 and 8 gb ram with the 1.5 Celeron. I haven't played with the new 8.1 to know for sure but it does seem a bit slower, think its probably lack of ram?

If done right, Windows 8/8.1 is a lot faster than 7, especially with Laptops.

It all depends on the hardware. As for 8.x.x being faster on laptops. That I would disagree with.

How do you determine which one is faster ? You run both on the same hardware. So why does it all depend on the hardware ?

I have 7 Pro x64 and 8.1 Pro x64 in a dual boot on my rig in my specs, both running from an Intel 520 Series SSD. 8.1 appears to be noticeably faster than 7.

my ever so humble opinion would be both ram and the Celeron 1.1 that will make it slower

Windows 8 seems a lot faster to me than Windows 7 ever was, and it comes with a handy factory reset while keeping all your data too.

I would have to agree with this assement. The execution speed is going to suffer due to the slower clock rate of the processor. The RAM would make a difference too. More RAM always helps a system run faster. Personally I would never run 7 or 8/8.1 on less than 4 GB. However that is just my opinion. I tend to use a fair amount of RAM.

It has always been dependent on hardware. Laptops will always run slower then a Desktop or server rig will run with the same hardware.

On the same hardware Windows 8.1 should be faster than Windows 7. This is to be expected. Windows 8 has a number of performance enhancements and can take better advantage of hardware that did not exist when Windows 7 was designed.

But the influence of the OS on performance is relatively minor. The primary factor is hardware. Slower hardware will almost always have inferior performance no matter what OS it is running. 3 GB RAM is going to at least somewhat limit performance on any modern OS, particularly 64 bit. Not relevant here but a laptop will always be at a disadvantage compared to a similar desktop. The design priorities of a laptop are low weight, power consumption, and cost. Anything that compromises those priorities is often sacrificed.
