I would not even bother with the My passport. A lot of people have been having issues with those. Better to just get the SSD and clone the drive image over to it. As for backups. The Toshiba Canvio is a good drive for that. I use a Lenovo ix2-4 NAS for my backups, with no issue.

Anyway to fix the Hard drive ?
How long the hard drive will live ?
No way to fix a hard drive once it's dying, TheBit. And Broe is right . . . there's no way to be sure how long the drive will last. Your data is worth way more than the cost of a new hard drive, which can be nominal if need be.

Certainly, if you have the savvy and the cash to spare, I'd go with Broe's suggestion of the SSD drive. I know I would, but I don't have that much cash to spare. I just bought a new printer and spent exactly that much for it. It will print 13 x 17
    photos.

If you can't see your way clear to the SSD drive, here's a link to Newegg hard drives you may be interested in. Internal Hard Drives - Newegg.com This shows all the hard drives Newegg sells. The very first one looks very good to me and Western Digital has very good products.

If you actually built your system, you'll know which one(s) will work for you. If you had the system built, I'd talk to the guy who built it to be sure you get the right drive. Most current hard drives are SATA, either SATA 1 or SATA 2 so you'll need to know which one your computer will support.

It's definitely because the files are corrupt. Photoshop can't read the file because it encounters the end of the file on the disk before the place where the file header says is the end.

If you remove your SD card from your PC without using the 'eject media' function you can corrupt the files on the SD. I do that all the time, but about 99% of the time, no problems occur. If you copied them from a corrupted SD to somewhere else, they may copy but still be corrupted.

As far as ones downloaded from the Internet, either you copied them to the SD and then moved them back or you have some bad corruption on your hard drive.

Take a SD and format it. Do not use 'quick format'. Copy some known good files to it and then back to your HD. See if you can open them in PS. If so, the SD is probably ok. It may be that your camera's formatting and Windows are 100% compatible. This is especially true on older Camera cards.

Last December, I got a Toshiba (I don't like their laptops) external drive for $40.00 and have never had a problem with it. Mine is a 500 GB, but I'm sure they make 1 TBs too.

I've been looking for another bargain like that, but so far haven's seen one again.

I had some issues with mine too, but got it working only to drop it a few days later and the connector fell out/off. So, I agree to no My Passport!
