Initially HATED Metro, now I made my system great with it!

Yeah, hear me out dudes. I tried the original 8 DP release and hated it. Deleted in 10 minutes. I now have Consumer Preview. I originally hated Metro more than ANY of you - even the SW dude. :)

It really is faster than the old start menu. The trick is only to put a small amount of items on it and use Rocket Dock for the rest.

In my Rocket Dock, I have all major apps and then also a folder with tons of minor apps. It all works lovely now and like I said, things are definitely faster here than no Metro.

I leave you with 2 screenshots to give you an idea of what I mean with all this:

Untitled-1.jpg2.jpg

I initially thought MS was crazy but if you delete ALL the included Metro apps, do NOT use ANY Metro apps and copy or set similar to how I do - it IS faster than legacy Start menu.

How did you get all those small icons on the bottom right into the Rocket Dock ??

Hrrrmmmm...not entirely sure what you mean. I didn't do anything special with it. I just dragged and dropped the shortcuts to the dock then deleted the shortcuts from the desktop. I'm talking about where Malwarebytes is. Is that what you mean?

If you mean directly in front of the watermark, that is not icons. It is part of the Windows 7 theme/skin for Rocketdock.

How is this any different than not using Metro at all. Just create short-cuts, for the same applications, on the 'legacy' desktop, then you've got one less layer - Metro - to think about.

Ah yes, agreed.

In Windows 7, I have the things I've shown in my Metro screenshot in the Start Menu and they are the only things I go for there.
I missed it in Windows 8. But now that I DID put them in Metro and when I do go to start those particular items, I am easily able to do it quicker than before.

The reason for that is because the tiles are much bigger and I don't have to use the mouse precisely as I do when the start menu has smaller lines or icons like in 7. I can just click wild lol.

Who is the SW dude?

Glad you have found your workarounds.

I think many will find their own ways of avoiding the included metro stuff - perhaps dropping a handful of their own shortcuts in there- - then using something as a kind of start menu alternative - you chose rocketdock.

Seems like a very usable solution.

Actually, I think there is some fantastic stuff in win8.

What I don't like is the insistence on forcing people to use metro - fine for simple stuff on a portable - but it would be better if they gave the customers a choice.

You have in fact confirmed that.

From what you posted , it doesn't seem that you really like metro.

What you seem to be doing is largely avoiding it.

You have created a few shortcuts that you use straight from the metro start screen - often you will use rocketdock . In effect, you are using it as a replacement for the classic start menu.

I think many will do just that - they will find their own preferred ways of doing it, of course.

Thanks for posting it up - I am sure lots will give your solution a go.

I think we were doing the same in Win7. Who really used the Start menu for starting programs. At best it was used to search, and that is the same with the Metro Start. The whole page is a search field. The other use was to make shortcuts from All Programs (I always hated rolling thru all of those). That task is a lot easier now in All Apps. Even getting to the program Properties is easy by opening the file location.

Well yeah, I do dislike Metro and as you can see, it's why I removed and/or uninstalled everything included in it by default.

But as it is now - I just got done adding CDAudio source audio compressed to AC3 to a new Youtube video - so I had to get the calc and notepad out - it really did allow me to get those apps much quicker than usual.

Basically, I notice things like this because my personality is that I do things very quickly. It's just how I am I suppose heh.

You're welcome! But ya, to sum it up, I dislike it and avoid it but when I do actually use it, it is quicker than before.

So, pressing 'Winkey + search for tile + click' is quicker than - assuming the shortcut is on the desktop - 'search for icon + double click (single if you configure it)' Alternatively, if you'd pinned the shortcut to your taskbar or placed it in the dock, it's only a click.

This thread got wishy washy fast, but whatever it's trying to say, I do feel like Metro is faster. I also use Object Dock for a few things, but not to the extent you're loading it up. I do think it's key, and it's not like I didn't use one in 7. More impressed with what happens when you do in 8. I really like winkey+Q after I cut out all the fluff, renamed and grouped folders, and treat it like a second tier to the winkey menu.

Yes, it is a given that objects pinned to the superbar can open quicker than any start menu.

Personally, I do not like anything pinned there. I have a select few objects I have classically liked in the start menu and that's where I always go for them by force of habit.

All I am saying is that for how I like things to be setup, and now doing so on 8 - when I actually do go for those shortcuts it is faster than before. Windows 8 does not break my habits and actually increases their speed.

I'm not comparing apples to oranges here (shortcuts in one place or another). I'm comparing having things on the 7 start menu and 8 start menu only. 8 works faster for me. Not saying anything more or anything less. No need to complicate anything. :)

I'm talking preference here. I can easily setup Windows 8 here so that I never - absolutely never (only at boot momentarily until a shortcut auto brings to classic desktop) - have to see Metro without even disabling it. I don't want to do that though.

As for apps actually running in Metro...lol...even if they made an app that can successfully hack and then tune in Tokyo, I wouldn't use it there.

I just made a video displaying how quick the Metro is for me. Please keep in mind that I am on a 2005 machine (P4 3.5 GHz with 2 GB DDR @ 400 MHz) so my actual machine is slower than most of yours. Also, Camtasia Studio recording slows the machine down drastically. (When I show the classic desktop, you can see the CPU meter pinned @ 100% time.)

If you keep those things in mind while watching, it is easy to see why I like this start menu over 7s. 7 could not open programs this quickly because the shortcuts are smaller and there is a greater need for accuracy there.

(Video is still processing upon my post here. Eventually, the res choice will be higher.)

How is this any different than not using Metro at all. Just create short-cuts, for the same applications, on the 'legacy' desktop, then you've got one less layer - Metro - to think about.

This was my initial thought as well when I read this thread... don't get me wrong, I'm glad the OP has found a set-up that is working for him... but I don't understand how Rocket Dock comes into this... if you want to pin your shortcuts to the legacy desktop, you can do that, or to the taskbar. Rocket Dock is another alternative... but none of this is revolutionary. We all knew we could do this from the get-go.

Cool, cool. Thanks! :)

Again, I'm speaking of the speed increase between the 8 and 7 Start Menus for me. Rocketdock is not a focus here. I did mention it though because I know how everyone seems to dislike shortcuts on the actual desktop. MS spoke and all the sheep followed along, when they made Vista and/or 7.

Of course RD is nothing revolutionary. I don't think it has even been updated for years.
