Hi guys,

I've been using Windows 8 since it came out. I shut my computer down last night and I've gone to log in this morning and i get this message:

Your machine is offline please try to sign in with the last password used on this machine.

I've tried all my passwords, what is this? I can't log in..

I just got this too. Please advise

If you're sure you are putting in the correct password, then it could mean your account was hacked on the net aka cloud. Someone could have changed it for you.

Recommend to have a local based account instead and forget that cloud nonsense.

I had this once a few weeks ago, in my case it was just a transient network problem. I'm guessing you've tried a reboot, so disconnect and reconnect your network cable/adapter. If you're using a router, reboot this too. Failing that, try starting in safe mode and check the Windows system log for any failed network connections.

to use my pc again i had to plug in my cat-5 cable.
my supposition, i have not retried it, was that when i turned on 'airplane' mode i forced the above condition
i will re-test this if necessary, but hopefully somebody on the windev team can check RAID for this and let us know it's fixed for RTM release.

That sounds about right. If Windows is unable to ascertain the type of network to which it's connected, it will often display the 'offline' status.

I think I figured out the problem and it is network irrelevant, I kept receiving the same error message when I am off-line.
My password on Hotmail account included an upper case character , so I entered the same password all in small case and it worked (I was able to log in)
I think it is a Microsoft bug where some times the last saved password is recorded in the system all in small case irrelevant the original password.
I hope this will help

Scenario: Win8 RTM working fine, use msn acct for login. Took my notebook to a new location, new wifi and got the "Your PC is offline. etc" I could not connect to the wifi, just went back to the user log in screen and I had no NIC. I unlocked the Admin account following instructions I found on the web (NT Pwd edit). Logged in as Admin and connected to the wifi and internet and switched user to the original account and it took the pwd.

This is a major flaw if the network connection is the issue to log in using your Microsoft account. You change wifi networks and you can't boot your computer! My solution is to leave the Admin account active and set a strong password.

This is the correct fix for me. Although this was on a tower (zzz 2 flights of stairs away from the router). Changing the account type to local hopefully makes this go away forever. Pretty frustrated with MS atm tbh.

Super, this one was really helpful. I ran into that same problem and magically, using lower case instead, it let me in. I guess I'll have to figure out how to setup a local account to avoid that bug :)

I have my Laptop setup with a Microsoft Account. I get this error when Windows does not connect and it basically says to use the last password I used. I forgot I changed to use the PIN option and it works. Then I connected to the Net and locked it and unlocked it with my password.

So the lesson here is remember how you logged in last.
