Correctly updating Windows 8 OEM to 8.1

I have a notebook with windows 8 OEM. I want to update the OEM to 8.1, so that if I needed to refresh my PC, it would refresh to 8.1 and not 8.

You could say just do a clean install of 8.1: fully format my drive, and install 8.1. But I think there might be some consequences to this approach. I am not 100% (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I think I wouldn't have access to the manufactures recovery mode (By pressing a special button on my notebook), because the recovery partition would be formatted. One of the buttons allow me to access my BIOS, so I don't want to mess that crucial component...

So is there a tutorial on how to achieve this?

Like I said, I want to keep my notebook's special button functionality, but I am open to hear You opinions about it.

I think this is what you're looking for: Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image

Not sure about the button thing.
