I have a number of folder shortcuts in my user folder.
Recently I have noticed that when I open a folder via those shortcuts that two copies of the folder appear.
Have tried deleting and recreating the shortcuts but to no avail.

The shortcuts behave normally from the desktop but as soon as I move or copy them to user folder the problem occurs.

I've tried it and could not produce what you are experiencing. You can try to run from elevated command prompt:

- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- sfc /scannow

To make sure that your system is clean.

You can also try to create a junction link instead of a shortcut.
For example: mklink /J C:\Users\yourUserName\testFolder X:\somePath\someFolder where X is any drive in your PC.

The error 0x800f0906 is net framework 3.5 related and here's the link
Repair Corrupt Windows Image - Error 0x800f0906

Tried that, made no difference.

However SFC Scannow did find and fix some issues but the problem with the shortcuts persists.

I know a lot of people are having the problem with dism and they don't seem to have a solution for it. However, you said SFC found problems and did fix them successfully, am i right ?
The next thing I would suggest is to run CCleaner to clean the registry.

BTW, did you try what I suggest to use mklink instead ?

Thanks, I did try mklink and that looks to be the better solution.

However this situation coupled with some other funnies that I have encountered recently is edging me toward a re-install.
Biggest issue with that is redoing settings and reinstalling apps.
From what I can remember of Windows Easy Transfer it doesn't really help.
Last time I tried it on Windows 8 it came up with all kinds of Language Level problems.
I wonder if it has improved.

Couple of things I suggest before you re-install:
  1. Download Advanced Tokens Manager from Josh Cell Softwares - Freeware Solutions | Amazing Products to make a back up of your Activation info.
  2. Re-install Windows then use the Activation saved in step 1 to re-activate it. This will save you time to re-activate online or in some case, you have to call MS.

Good luck.

Just discovered that WET has been redacted and is not available to copy data from a Windows 8.1 system.
Will try a refresh to see if that gets rid of the funnies.
If it doesn't then it'll have to be the full horror of a reinstall.

Do Apple users have this kind of crap? :geek:

You won't believe this!

Changed view option to "Open each folder in its own window" and the problem disappeared.

This despite the fact that I've always used the "Open in same window" option.

Still doesn't explain the sudden change in behaviour.
