    desktop icons move, upon reboot/standby

    Hi All,

I have this very annoying problem, relating to windows 8.1 where upon start up the icons rearrange towards the top right hand side the screen.

It may happen from when I re-start the PC from standby, or if the screen saver has been activated, or even possibly upon a cold reboot.

I should mention, that Im using a 27" High DPI monitor (2560x1440) connected via Displayport. Ive also have enabled auto arrange icons/align icon to grid.

    Lenovo Workstation E32
    Screensaver is enabled
Intel/latest HaSwell CPU (I5) with built in graphics (displayport)

    thanks for any input

Ive also have enabled auto arrange icons/align icon to grid.
    You should disable Auto Arrange

And disable align to grid if you don't want to be restricted to preset columns. Also, once you get them arranged the way you want, do a desktop refresh to make sure they stick.

Are you talking about icons on the start screen or your desktop? If I use an external monitor my desktop icons leap from one to the other but start screen stay in the same place...

Well I get that issue too - my recycle bin always moves after I connect my TV to watch a movie (I have lenovo also but I doubt it is relevant).

I find P and change from "extend" to "PC monitor only" and back fixes it. That is not a solution of course - I realise that - but I'll watch and see if anyone else comes up with one.

It happens to me sometimes too when switching between HDMI. I think it is a scaling thing.

There are small utilities to save the positions and restore such as this: DesktopOK Trusted Freeware download and reviews - SnapFiles.com

I find the "it's just one of those things" solutions a bit unsatisfactory. But it is the truth though.

I thought it was doing the + shift + left arrow to move my screen moved my recycle bin but no - it has a life of it's own. Sometimes it comes back on the left, sometimes on the right.

Now you mention it Popeye, it sounds like scaling

I too believe that it must be some sort of scaling issue, as when my pc was connected to an HD monitor (1920x1080 Displayport) I was NOT seeing any icon issues, but what I'm perplexed about is that I'm only using the one monitor, and no additional display outputs.

is there some sort of official Microsoft technical support where this can be raised as a bug?

I like W8 interface alot, but certain things don't seem to work. Like normally, you could go into the Start menu, and copy/move/edit/delete icons. But In W8, I don't see any way of doing this. The only options they give you is to pin. So the "All Programs" Menu in W8 is the Apps menu. And...
