    browser tabs keep spontaneously turning into adverts

    I downloaded a bunch of adware and other undesirable stuff by accident earlier on in the day. However, I have removed all of it as far as I can see and I also used Malware Bytes to do a sweep of all things unpleasant, and removed what it brought up. I still seem to be having problems with my browser tabs spontaneously turning into adverts though. It's driving me nuts! I don't see anything in the control panel added today so how do I find out what's causing this?

    Are you using IE or third party browser? If third party, you can uninstall then reinstall it. If IE, maybe try clearing all data(cookies, history, etc.)

    I'm using chrome and firefox. I just did a massive scan which took for ever with this thing called spyhunter but it's trying to charge me to remove the threats it's identified. Is there any way I can remove these programs myself? They don't seem to appear in my control panel

    Try Malwarebytes or Herdprotect, they are good at these stuff

    I've already used Malwarebytes and it doesn't seem to have removed much of it at all. I have a list of what needs to go from spyhunter but no idea how I can access the files as they don't appear in the control panel.

    Then try the second option: Download herdProtect - Free Anti-Malware Platform you can also search for the files in their knowledgebase

    Can you try to do a system restore prior to the time you have this problem.
    1. Hold down Winkey+C ->Settings->Power then keep holding down the SHIFT key and click on Restart
    2. Trouble Shoot->Advanced Options->System Restore
    3. Select a restore point prior to having the problem.

    If the above does not work then try to look for where all the craps got installed. For both Firefox and Chrome, they usually got installed as Add-ons (Firefox) and Extensions (Chrome). In the screen shot, they are both look familiar, click on what I circled, and select Add-ons for Firefox and Remove all the Add-ons. For Chrome, click on Settings then Extensions on the top left corner and remove all the extensions.

    Click image for larger version

    In addition, download AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool Download then run them, they are portable versions so there's no installation involved.
    Restart your PC

    Have you scanned with Windows Defender? Tutorial here: Scan with Windows Defender - Add in Windows 8

    It looks like you've gotten an aggressive form of adware on your computer. Sometimes AVs don't take care of it, but AdAware by Lavasoft is a very good adware remover and has been around for quite some time. Just be sure to go to lavasoft.com using this link: Ad-Aware Free Antivirus and Antispyware by Lavasoft | Protection from Virus, Spyware & Malware | Top Internet Security for Windows.

    Also, you might go into your home page on either browser and see if it's been changed. Mine is my.msn.com and when an adware package gets onto your computer it could be changed to something like adware.com, adsgalore.com, etc.

    Tried herdprotect - it has removed some stuff but there's still loads on there. Just tried to do the windows defender thing but I can't see in the instructions how you're supposed to save the .reg file to the laptop as I don't know where to look for the .reg file. I'll try the system restore thing next but I just had some windows updates. Does it remove good stuff along with bad?

    Just removed some stuff from Chrome's "Extensions" and that seems to have done something! I'll wait and see if there are any further problems but fingers crossed various things seem to have helped!
