    Downloading

    Hi All!

I've got a problem. I've searched to see if I could find any answers, but nothing has helped.

Quite simply, my problem is that when I download something I cannot access the internet until the download is finished.

This happens some of the time but not always.

As an example-- in this case I'm uploading-- but it happens also when downloading, I upload a video to You Tube. My connection to the internet is lost until I finish the upload.

This happens also when downloading a torrent. When it's going to happen is hard to determine. Sometimes it happens and other times it doesn't. I haven't found a pattern.

    Cable connection, using a router.

Any ideas? This kind of thing never happened with XP.

    Thanks,

    Alan

What ISP? Cable or DSL? What modem? UP and DOWN speeds?

This happens also when downloading a torrent. When it's going to happen is hard to determine. Sometimes it happens and other times it doesn't. I haven't found a pattern.

Normally when the problem is only when downloading torrents, the machine may be allowing too many simultaneous connections, what may saturate the router/modem.

But it's not only happening with torrents. And sometimes it doesn't happen every time I download something from a torrent.

I mean, say, for instance, that I'm downloading an update to a program I have. During the download, I lose internet connection completely. This really should not be happening. Is there a setting in Windows 8.1 that needs to be changed?

My ISP is Time Warner. Cable connection. My modem is a Motorola Surfboard. Downloading speeds somewhere around 23 Mb/s and upload about 2.3 Mb/s.

    Thanks,

    Alan

    It's an Acer, AG3-605 UR38. 8g memory.

I do have one device that is unknown and I haven't been able to get drivers for it. I think it's a PCI device.

But I doubt that is the problem (even though I'd like to find a driver for that device, whatever it is).

    Thanks,

    Alan

You should not have any missing device drivers if you are using the OEM install of Windows 8. As for the issue with not being able to do anything while uploading. Really need to dig deeper. What does your speedtest results show from speedtest.net or Time Warner's Speedtest site?

If you are using a Torrent program all of the time. Time Warner may have you throttled.

Speed tests show pretty consistent uploading and downloading. Of course, when the problem occurs, I can't even access any sites.

As far as torrents go, I use them but really not very often. And I have upload speeds way down when I do use them. I might download using torrents three times a week.

It's really a mystery: sometimes it happens and other times it doesn't. I could be downloading some trial program or some freeware and it will happen. Once the dl is over, access is restored.

But I do have a device that is missing its driver (yellow with black exclamation point). I don't think that's the issue and I've noticed no other problems because of it so I just leave it be, only every once in a while seeing if I can find a driver for it.

I'm at a loss as to what I can do. I'll just keep working on it.

    Thanks for your help,

    Alan

Alan, could you go back to your profile and fill in every blank you possibly can for your computer system? Brand, RAM, HDD size, Router Brand/model, Modem Brand/model, and anything else it asks. Sometimes knowing your specs can help someone better help you.

Secondly, it could be that your ISP is throttling your connection. I see that you haven't found a pattern yet, so I would suggest that when you download or upload, keep a record of what time you started, how many gigs, megs, etc. you're downloading/uploading and how long it takes. Whether or not you could go to other sites or not. And anything else you think may give you a hint. I have an inkling that it could be during peak downloading hours that this is happening to you.

I have one computer that's old enough to have had XP on it (since taken down and stored), which had Windows 8.1 (pre 8.1 Update) and had no problems with downloading and surfing at the same time, ever.

Go to your computer manufacturer's site and look at their forums. Is anyone else having the same problem you are? Since I don't use torrents (they scare me), and I see there are many versions, maybe you need to update to one that runs with Windows 8 . . . or not.

Speaking as a complete novice as to torrents, could it be that you've unintentionally gone somewhere that gave you something that gramma's lye soap won't take off? Have you run Windows Defender? Or any other Anti Virus?

I filled in a few things.

Secondly, it could be that your ISP is throttling your connection. I sincerely doubt my ISP is throttling my connection. I've had this latest machine for 2 months now and with my other machine, running XP, such a thing never happened. That cannot be a coincidence: new machine, new OS, download problems.

Go to your computer manufacturer's site and look at their forums. Is anyone else having the same problem you are? Since I don't use torrents (they scare me), and I see there are many versions, maybe you need to update to one that runs with Windows 8 . . . or not.
I've done this and will continue to look around. As for the torrents and maybe I caught something, I doubt this is the issue. As I say, I don't do that much downloading, and what I do download is often times updates to programs and other things.

It has to be some sort of setting that's causing all this. Again, sometimes it goes away for a week or two and then returns. Sometimes I can download and surf, other times I cannot. And there doesn't seem to be any pattern, such as it happening only during peak hours. If it did, I could understand that.

I've scanned my system and there doesn't appear to be any problems.
