Hi,

Just to explain what I'm trying to imitate.

I have a shortcut on my Windows 7 desktop that I have mapped to a file on my server which is password protected. When I click the shortcut the credential flag pops up so I can enter my username and password. After that I can gain access to my file.

On my Windows 8 machine I did exactly the same thing with the mapping bit and then created the shortcut on the desktop. It works fine.

The thing I can't figure out is how to get that shortcut on to the Windows 8 start screen.

I have actually got the icon there but it doesn't work as it should when clicked I get a message that says the location doesn't exist.

I would be most grateful if someone could offer some help.

Thanks

I have a couple of custom shortcuts I've pinned to my start menu. The actual location is C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs < If you put a shortcut in that folder it will show up on your start screen. You may have to go to All Apps and pin it to the main screen.

Thank you for your reply "alphanumeric" but as I previously said, I've already done that and it does show up on the start screen. The problem is that it doesn't function on there as it does when it's placed on the Win8 desktop.

When it's placed on the desktop, by clicking or touching it immediately opens the username/password security window. When placed on the start screen it doesn't. A message appears which states "location doesn't exist".

Thanks anyway.

Well you did say "The thing I can't figure out is how to get that shortcut on to the Windows 8 start screen." But I guess you then said "I have actually got the icon there but it doesn't work..." One statement contradicts the other.

I don't know why it doesn't work though.
