Speech Recognition Error

I've successfully setup Speech Recognition but when I restart the computer, I receive the following error message...

Windows 8 SR.jpg

When I try accessing "Advanced speech properties" to troubleshoot, I receive the following error "could not initialize volume meter. Please select a different audio input device".

Then the "Speech Properties" dialog box pops up and when I click "Advanced" and select the audio input device, the "Speech Properties" dialog box freezes every time when I try to hit "Apply". Not sure what's going on as I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Under your device manager , are there any yellow/red flags under the 'sound video and game controllers' list?

Same error, no fix found.

This is an old thread, but I just set up speech recognition and now this is happening. Everytime I try to change the advanced options it freezes and says "shell common.dll has stopped working."
