    Random restarts?

This just started yesterday. I updated to 8.1 a couple weeks ago, all was fine. In my updates I noticed there was an update for the graphics driver (never saw them included in windows updates before) shortly after I had updated to 8.1. Stupidly I tried to install it, forgetting that I have an nvidia geforce gt430 installed (don't need the other update, correct?). It crashed when it tried to install but computer started up fine and had been working fine the past two weeks. I only bring it up because it's the only thing different going on in the past few weeks. I looked in my update history and found this: Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - Intel(R) HD Graphics

    Installation date: ‎5/‎2/‎2014 11:34 PM

    Installation status: Failed

    Error details: Code 80070057

    Update type: Important

Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 software update released in January, 2014

I assume it wouldn't install because of the nvidia? Anyway, is there some other setting or something going on that would make my computer randomly restart? It NEVER happens while I'm on it/using it. Seems I walk away and come back and it has gone back to the main computer screen where you have to sign in with a password to get to the start/desktop screens. I looked at my sleep setting and it was 5 minutes...would sleep make it restart? I changed it to never and hoping that will solve the problem.

Sounds to me like you need to change your power options to "don't require password on wakeup".

Click image for larger versionClick image for larger version

Go to Control Panel>Power Options and click on Require a password on wakeup. Once you've clicked, you'll see the second page I've uploaded. Although you see that I have the radio button for "Don't require a password", you must first click on the line that says, "Change settings that are currently unavailable". Now you can click on Don't require a password. Save your changes and close the control panel.

Hopefully, this will get you back to where you were before.

Edit: Arrrggghhh! I can never get these .png files right! The smaller one on the left is the first one to look at and isn't part of the second larger one on the right. There are two pictures. Sigh . . .

Thanks for the tip, I went in and it's already set to "don't require a password", the computer is actually shutting down and restarting during the night which has me so frustrated as I have satellite internet and that's when I have stuff set up to download as needed because midnight to 5:30 am is "free" unmetered. I've even thought about doing a system restore but when I go back to find restore points there aren't any except for when I installed 8.1 and I don't want to do that over again. I've really made no changes (got a new router, that's it) except mistakenly trying to let windows install that graphics driver that I mentioned in the original post.
It never did this before, in fact on restarts I never used to have to sign in with a password. I'm at a loss. Would a whole system refresh help? I really hate to do that, I know it says you won't lose your files but don't I have to re-download all my programs, etc? And spending time to set everything up all over again the way I like it is tiring to think of.

In the power settings I see where it has that it has a power plan setting that Dell recommends and it says in the tree under hard disc, turn off hard disc after 90 minutes, is THAT my problem? I would like that set to never (only off if I turn off the computer), but it will only let me set in minutes, should I put in something like 100,000 if I can? Or there are other choices such as Balanced, High Performance or Power Saver, are one of those better? I don't want to pick one and change my settings til I'm sure that might help....

the hdd shut down should not cause the computer to restart.if you are downloading stuff from the internet all night that would mean activity ,hdd only shuts down in 90min of inactivity

I'm not downloading every night, in fact I would say once a week, or when there are updates, I set it for 100000 minutes and I'll see if it's still on tomorrow morning, if it is, then that's probably what's going on, I think....

OK, do you have a screensaver set up to run? If so, there's a check box that says "On resume, display logon screen". Of course, if it's checked, it makes you type in your password.

I almost went crazy trying to figure out why my friend's system kept requiring a password on resume until someone here told me about this.

Just looked to be sure and it's not checked so it's not that. THe computer is actually shutting down and restarting it looks to me, I walked away from it for about 3 hours and it was still on where I left it (not the start up screen, etc)when I came back which is a first for the past couple days, I'm thinking changing hard disc shut down helped but we'll see tomorrow morning....

    +1 On That

Also suggest you go to Action Center, Maintenance and Select : View Reliability History

This will give you an idea of what's going on.
