"This PC" folder takes forever to load. Explorer.exe

I am running Windows 8.1x64 on an HP DV6 laptop with 8GB RAM & 720GB HDD. Sys Specs - Imgur
Every time I try to open the "Computer" folder (formerly "My Computer,") the window shows that it's loading for a very long time. It'll eventually come up and show me what drives are mounted. This has been going on since about July 2013. At that time my computer was running Win 7, I upgraded to Win 8 when it was released, and recently Win 8.1.
Here is a visual: Computer - Imgur
It will eventually show it's contents, but after 5-15 minutes of sitting in a hang.

Everything else works fine, I can open any folder and it won't do this. It only does it when I try to go into the "This PC" folder.

Here is what I was able to view in event viewer right after the hang imgur: the simple image sharer
The only useful information in the details tab is that it was Explorer.exe at C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

Short of doing a clean install, is there something I can do to fix this?

It is a sign of one of the disk drives/CD/DVD or USB device becomes defective/corrupted or hard to read.

I do have a card reader and CD/DVD drive. Do you think I should go about disabling them and seeing if it helps?

Yes and BTW, it would help us to help you if you fill out your System Specs.

Quick Fix... or rather Quick Fail

    Hi all!

As I mentioned yesterday, I have this problem too and *thought* I found a quick fix, but it just so happened that the lag had simply skipped a turned precisely when I tried it... and then came back. So the tweaking of power plan settings might in fact change nothing, but you may try anyway, since it is easily reversible and, more importantly, quick...

Here is the not-so-effective solution if you mant to give it a try:
    1. Go to your computer's power options (a fast way is by right-clicking on the battery icon in the taskbar)
    2. Click on "Change plan settings" beside the applicable plan in the list
    3. Click on "Change advanced settings"
    4. Develop "USB settings"
    5. Develop "USB selective suspend setting"
    6. Disable that, click OK... and it's done.

Again, as I already mentioned, I am not knowledgeable enough to suggest a more suitable solution, but, as topgundcp pointed out, I guess you should still focus on disk drives, CD/DVD or USB devices.

For instance, here are a few possible causes of such a lag:
If there is a defective USB key connected
If a syncing problem is encountered by OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive)
If the Windows registry contains too many entries of previously used storage volumes not currently connected.

    Anyway, good luck!

OK. Weird stuff. Windows 8.1 x64. When I directly click on the Taskbar Explorer icon, it flashes for a bit, then nothing. If I right click and select a pinned folder, it opens instantly. I also have a CMD prompt pinned to the task bar. If I right click, then right click on the CMD again...
For some reason the green bar goes all the way across the top of the screen before the devices and printers menu will load. In then loads without an issue after waiting for almost two full minutes. This is a core I7 Win 8.1 PC with 16GB of ram and an SSD so it screams otherwise. I do have a...
