Solved Can't delete folder

I was trying to clean up my 8.1 system and encountered a folder that it won't allow me to delete or move. It is in C:\users\[me]\appdata\local\temp and is named rarsfx4. It appears to have been used by my AV pgm., Bitdefender, at install time. When I attempt to delete it, it asks me if I want to move it to the recycle bin. I click Yes. Then it says I need to provide administrator permission to delete it. I click Continue. Then a little window pops up and quickly disappears that says '234 items recycled.' Then another window appears that says 'You require permission from xxx\me to make changes to this folder' and gives me only the option to try again, which just repeats this last process. xxx is my PC name, and xxx\me is my user profile name, not any user account name that shows up in Control Panel, User Accounts. (I have only one user account, which is a network one, my gmail ID.) When I check Properties, Security, for the folder, I see that System, my network user account (which is an administrator), and Administrators (xxx\Administrators) all have full control. When I click on Advanced under Security above, the owner is displayed as Administrators (xxx\Administrators).

I also tried deleting the folder using Command Prompt, Run as administrator, but get 'access denied' for every file.

My questions are what is going on here, and what can I do to remedy it?

I tried using Properties, Security, Advanced, Permissions, and clicked Change beside the owner, but it gave me no list of possible owners to choose from. Then I tried downloading the most recent Ultimate Windows Tweaker to add Take Ownership to the Explorer context list for files and folders. I rebooted as directed. I clicked Take Ownership in the context list for rarsfx4, but the owner did not change. It remains Administrators (xxx\Administrators). Do you suggest using a different Take Ownership pgm.?

I tried Superantispyware Superdelete on a couple of files in that folder. It didn't get rid of them, though there was no error message. (I then tried Superdelete on a test file in my Documents folder, just to make sure it worked there, which it did.) [See below for correction; Superdelete actually did work on files in Rarsfx4.]

I await further suggestions.

Enable the hidden Administrator account. Enter net user administrator /active:yes from a Elevated Command Prompt.
Boot to Safe Mode and login as Administrator.

See if you can delete it from there.

Hi Rick,
Dont think its Bitdefender, im running that and it doesn't appear in my local temp folder, it appears to be Nirsoft, A system tune up tool, so if your using it the error message should be unable to delete this program is currently in use by another prog.

Sorry not to get back till now. Taking these things in order, I was wrong about Superantispyware Superdelete. It really does delete individual files in that folder, but the deleted files showed up until I rebooted. There is a little note in one of Superdelete's windows that a reboot may be required for certain files; I overlooked that at first. Reboot is not required by Superdelete for all files, though it seems to be for any file in the Rarsfx4 folder. I asked Superanti. whether there is any way to delete folders, as opposed to files, and they replied that there isn't.

Logging on as Admin. after a Safe Boot enabled me to delete individual files. I feel sure I can delete the entire folder that way as well. That provides an effective solution, though I still don't understand why the problem is occurring.

Bitdefender is still installed on my system and is running normally.

The files in my Rarsfx4 folder really are Bitdef. ones. They match the Program Files folder for Bitdef. There has never been a msg. about Rarsfx4 being in use. The folder creation date is the date I installed Bitdef. My guess is that that folder was a temporary one used by Bitdef. at install time. But the folder remains jealously guarded, even though I supposedly have Full Control.

I already have Revo installed on my system. However, I wouldn't want Revo to uninstall Bitdefender, just get rid of that one folder. Is there a way to ensure that Revo will delete only a single file or folder and not uninstall an entire program?

Last night I was still able to use Revo Uninstall Pro, but my 30 day trial evidently expired overnight. Revo Free doesn't have the Forced Uninstall option, so I can no longer experiment.

Hi Rick,
try the above mentioned. the free version has a forced uninstall option as shown by David.
What version bitdef are you running, mines the free version, and i find no reference to that folder.

I just checked features of Revo Free vs. Pro on the web, and Forced Uninstall says YES only for the latter. It doesn't show up in the menu bar for the free version that I have.

Anyway, I have already deleted the folder using the Safe Boot method described above.

That folder, which contained Bitdef. stuff, was apparently created by a packaging application called Winrar. It was supposed to be temporary, but for an unknown reason became tricky to delete.
