Restore computer, then update to 8.1

I am going to be restoring a Windows 8 computer to factory original, then upgrading it to 8.1. Would it be better, after the restore, to let Windows Update do all the original Windows 8 updates, then go to the Windows Store and upgrade to 8.1, or should I go to the Store right after the restoration, get 8.1, and then do Windows updates?

Thanks

Just update to 8.1.1 and you will be fine. As long as the drive is not acting up, you should have no issues. I always run a Disk Cleanup after doing any major updates on a computer.

I'm in full agreement with Popeye and Frozwire. Frozwire's link is very useful! Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows

OK thanks to all. I'm running the Win Updates now, not sure if I'll even get to 8.1 today. The wife is chomping at the bit to get the computer back asap.

That is a good link for the upgrade info, thanks.

I can see advantages to doing the upgrade either way. Going right to 8.1 may bypass downloading and installing updates that are not going to be needed, updates that could even be problematic. But I'm not sure that 8.1 would even be offered without them. Maybe next time I'll try going right to 8.1 to see what happens.

Vincenzo, you're right, there are some updates to win 8 that must be installed before Microsoft will offer the update to 8.1. With that said, once you have Windows 8 updated until no more updates can be found, go to the Store and Microsoft will install Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update at the same time, since Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update have been rolled into one.

BTW, the official name for the last update is Windows 8.1 Update; some of us started calling it windows 8.1.1 and/or Windows 8.1 Update 1 before Microsoft told us what they were calling it. :)
