What is a reason not to buy iMac or rMBP?

I looked at Windows version and I don't think they are terribly cheaper than the Mac equivalents?

Would you agree?

top of the line windows based desktop computers and laptops are expensive ,as are mac computer .so not difference excpt most users are familiar with windows so they choose windows
but for the average user they don't want or need the best ,so they buy entry level windows based computer ,like acer/gateway/lenova /hp models ect ect for about 399.00 to 449.00 cdn ,whereas a mac entry level laptop is about 1000.00cdn

An equivalent PC is about the same price as a MacBook Pro. My 3.5lb Dell, core i5, e6430u ultrabook, with 8gb of ram, with a 256gb SSD, with Intel Hd4000 graphics running 1600x900, with HDMI output, with USB3 ports, card reader, and Windows 8 pro was actually a few bucks more expensive than my 3.5lb, core i5 MacBook pro, with 8gb of ram, and 256gb SSD, with Intel hd5000 graphics with 2560x1600, with USB3 ports, HDMI, 2 lightening 2 ports, and a card reader.

Price aside, they are very different. One is not necessarily better than the other. I like and use them both.

My rMBP is my first ever Apple computer. I've had it now about 6 weeks. Quite happy with it. It's got its pros and cons. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. And I won't give up Windows anytime soon. But completely satisfied with my purchase. It's been a great learning experience and nice to learn a different way to do things that I have been doing in Windows and Linux for many years.

For fun, I benchmarked the SSD drives that came in both laptops.

There is no such think. I would rather compare Mac OS 10.x.x to a Linux Distro then Windows. It is all about how deep your wallet is. Our mobile devices for the majority are iOS, with the exception of one tablet, that is a Google Nexus 7, running Android OS. One Laptop running Windows 8.1.1, and my laptop running Xubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit.

I just spent 3 1/2 days fixing a Windows 7 machine with a bad platter drive. Took going through four different recovery tool disc's, to find one that could recover the image properly. At least with Mac OS or Linux, you do not have that problem when the drive starts going bad. It is just pop in the Live CD and clone the info to the new drive.

pparks1, the only way that works, is if they are the same hardware for the laptops and the SSD's are the same ones, from the same batch.

To say nothing about different programs used to benchmark and controllers used on 2 different machines.

Well, one was testing a Windows machine using HDTune and one was testing a Mac where HDTune is not natively available.

A little time with Google shows similar numbers for the PCI Express based MacBook Pros. And some PCs are moving to PCI Express based storage controllers too, because they are faster. But going PCI Express is more expensive, because it offers more performance.

My moth literary waters when I see those PCIx drives but they are so far from my budget, might as well be on Mars.

And that was reason for my post, the Macs might be more expensive than budget pcs, but they aren't running the same budget hardware. When considered in context, Macs aren't really super expensive anymore.

but they are to expensive for low income earners who only need /want to surf the net and play some music and videos ,so there is a need for cheap entry level windows based laptop

CaperJack, you can pick up a Refurb 13.1" Macbook from Newegg right now, for around $450. It will do everything that the regular user would need it for. That is emails, Internet, school work, will also do games.

Right, like I said the Mac is not for everyone. The bargain/budget computer is an area that Apple doesn't have any offerings in. So, it's impossible to compare there. But when you compare them to comparable pcs, it's not a huge premium like it used to be.
