New to Win 8.1 which came loaded on a box purchased to run a home automation application. Installed the application and it runs perfectly when launched manually. The program opens a control window and then launches a browser interface. I attempted to make the make the program auto start by placing a shortcut in the startup folder. That didn't work. At least the control window never opened and the browser never launched. I tried several things (honestly don't remember all the steps I took), but the program didn't open. So I tried creating a bat file to open the program and placed that in the startup folder. That worked, except when the bat file executed, I got a message that said the program was already running. Sure enough, it showed it running in the task manager and I could open a browser and the program's Web page. Since there wasn't a control window, I had to stop it running through the task manager. Removed the bat file from the startup folder and restarted the machine. Opened the task manager and the program was running again.
The program is NOT showing in either startup folder (user or common). I did find it in the registry ApprovedStartup folder and deleted that entry. It does not appear in the services running list. This is an older program and does not have an option to autostart.
I'm sure I did something in all my tries to get the program to autostart (I tried several things). I know I can do a rollback, but before I do that, I'd like to understand what I did and where Win 8 is loading the exe file. Are there "hidden" locations for autostart programs?
Thanks,
Barry
