How to make empty ODD show? Registry edit?
why?
in the file options I have unchecked "hide empty drives" to no effect on windows 8.1
this looks like a MS error
I see elsewhere that creative types have a registry hack to force it out of the closet
what is the recommended way here? brink? anyone?

Unchecking "hide empty drives" works for me in Windows 8.1. If the drive is unformatted and does not have a drive letter it won't show though.

Try this...
1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. (Type cmd in Windows 8 Metro UI (Start) and press ctrl+shift+enter)
2. Type the following and press Enter
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
3.Reboot

OK, optical drive. At first glace I thought you made a typo. Any way my empty DVD drive shows up in My PC, its an external USB DVD burner.
