All of a sudden i can no longer view IE11 from the desktop. It will not start at all and gives the message "Explorer has stopped working". I have tried the following -

  • the advice provided ion previous posts on this site
  • switching Explorer off, rebooting, switching it back on and rebooting again
  • Registry clean
  • disabling anti virus and firewall
  • system restore - this however failed on several restore dates because it could not find a file.

I can use Explorer if started from the tile but it is a completely different format with no tool bars, add-on etc.

Any ideas?

Unbelievable - I switched off and left it for a while and now Explorer works perfectly. Its return is as mysterious as its departure!

Lol.

I can think of many wild goose chases I could have solved just by turning the PC off for a few minutes, rather than doing restarts.

Some things just seem to stay locked in memory and keep giving you the same problem.

I guess the "Have you tried turning it off and on" advice really does have some merit. (as long as you give it a minute or two)
