Solved .docx

My pc randomly converted all of my word documents to .docx yesterday.

Why did it do this without my permission?

Is it better to have .docx or .doc?

What other random things in 8 should i be aware of going on without my permission?

I've never heard of .doc files automatically being converted to .docx. Generally speaking, the .docx is a better file format as it's a compressed xml format. Saves you on disk space.

When I say they converted, what I mean is they suddenly stated showing the tag .docx on the end of any saved word documents I had........why would my pc do this and what if I take the .docx off the end and rename the file/doc to what it used to be.....

Windows8 has nothing to do with how you save a file. Your word processor (MS Office ?) is saving those documents as .docx by default. Change the default to .doc if you prefer that extension

But in one sense it is windows 8 as it does things cloud-like and alows advertising/changes to slip in undetected.

I also know its Office 2013 but w8 allows it to operate and doesnt check it when it does rubbish.

My query wasnt how to change things back to .docs...........they may always have been .docx........

My query was how the endings of saved word files suddenly turned up with the ".docx on the ends when previously they didnt have it?

Did your files previously end in .doc? Or did it previously just have the file name listed with no extension.

Like I said before, Windows has NEVER just changed files from .doc to .docx. You would have had to have opened it with Word, and saved it, to get it to .docx.

I would say that this is a typical case of operator error.

If you want .doc rather than .docx, then you have to specify that when you save the file. The default in 2013 is .docx - and if you do nothing, that's what you get.

No, my files were Office 2013 and so they were .docx.

Not sure i am explaining this right but its not about what they end in but that they just started having tags when they were not tagged before.

So for example, i have a word document handy on my desktop which I keep alot of business contact phone numbers on.......it was called "Contacts".......and thats it.

Now it is called "Contacts.docx"...........

I dont even know if this is an Office 2013 problem as I noticed all my music files now have .wma on the end now when they never used to.

For some reason my system has just randomly decided to show all the extensions..............ooohhhh wait............

I ticked something the other day when trying to resolve a problem that said "show extensions".............now where was that?

Your latest explanation offers a completely different perspective on your issue. Open explorer and go to View> Options and check this box to remove the file extension from view:
