When I bought Win 8 the upgrade advisor told me to get the x86 version of the os because I was running it on XP x86. Ive now found an x64 bootable win 8 pe which Im typing this from and it seems to work pretty well.

So did I make the wrong choice getting the x86 version or would some of my old 32 bit programs like wordperfect office 2002 have trouble running on the x64 version of windows 8. I did have to use compatibility mode for this program on the 32 bit version but maybe it wouldnt run at all on 64 bit.

I also missed out on hyper v virtual machines which I like to test from time to time when trying new os etc. This of course is not in the 32 bit version even though my 64 bit machine supports it.

Guess I will have to wait for windows 9 before I can go 64 bit. Thoughts?

32 bit programs will run fine on 64 bit OS. As for Windows 9. Forget it. You are better off going with Windows 7x64 SP1 at this point with older hardware.

No one even knows what MS is going to do with Windows 9. They have already mentioned that they are changing things from the original design, when Ballmer was wanting it his way. Rumor is that 9 is supposed to be even more cloud based then 8.1.1 is at this point.

when u get something ur better off going with the x64 OS's cuz even 32 bit programs work on it a u have a bigger advantage. ( xcept for drivers ).

Could have been because of 4GB memory you have. for any more (or even to use up all 4GB) 64bit windows is needed.

I prefer x86 especially in work environments, it's a lot easier to deal with. The security is much tougher on 64 bit. I was installing Perfect Disk 13 which is supposed to be Windows 8.1 ready, and I had to install it using Admin Privileges. It's whatever you are using it for, if you are using it at home for gaming and stuff then 64 bit gives the best performance, but basically all of the apps you use run 32 bit. You can check this by looking in your Program Files (x86) folder, which becomes a lot larger than the 64 bit folder over time.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Security can only be another reason to use 64bit, can't be a minus despite having to occasionally give some extra permissions. 4GB of memory is getting to be on the minimum size nowadays too and x86 can't use more. Processors are 64bit and the rest of the system, why not use it all to the maximum potential. Just couple of years ago, moultithreaded programs were rare and look at the new ones now. Same goes for 64 bit apps, if I have a choice all the new programs I use are 64bit, specially important ones like Office etc. Soon 32bit applications are going the way of 16bit ones or the way of Dodo.
My 32bit and 64bit programs are about 50-50 right now and as more of them go to 64bit they will be upgraded. The only drawback I can see is that 16bit apps do not work on 64bit Win.

Your product code is good for 32 bit or 64 bit. Its your choice, assuming you have the 64 bit install media. Right now the onboard memory on your 9500 GT is subtracting from your 32 bit 4 gig max limit. If you go 64 bit it won't and you'll be able to use all of your 4 gigs of RAM. Assuming you can find 64 bit drivers for all your hardware. I've run lots of 32 bit software, including old games with no issues.

Can you run the 64 bit media as an upgrade to 32 bit? Anyone tried this if my key is good for 32 bit and 64 bit it may open up some new avenues?
