Solved Windows Update via Control Panel differs from PC Settings

Friends - I have been just "putting up" with this but my OCD nature is getting the better of me.
On a newish Lenovo laptop with 8.1 installed, a laptop that does not stay "On" all the time but powered off, then started fresh for use: Windows Update accessed from Desktop mode via Control Panel will often show "no updates" and no issues/problems/etc either. Windows Update accessed via PC Settings in "Windows 8 mode" will [after a protracted search during which the screen/tile is locked].

why? what's the point?
is it a bug? is there a way to have one instead of 2 [apparent] Win Update applets/utils?

One other nuisance I have that may or may not be related: at the Lock Screen I will see the message "There are updates - Go to PC Settings and install". A number of times I have followed that kindly suggestion via PC Settings and returned with no updates. Is that a spurious message?

My setting is currently "notify but don't install".

thanks for your help

I've noticed the same problem -- but since I use Desktop mode ALL the time, I just use the one in Control Panel.

so we just miss updates, declare victory, and move ahead full steam! ??:sarc:

sometimes that will work in our favor... and sometimes I suspect not :)

The version I start by right clicking the white flag will do the same thing if you select search. The system searches for updates at its scheduled time. If the updates are added after that, it will find them until the next day. I have seen instances where the update utility will not even search for updates until a search is manually requested.

Fairly often, although some updates are found, they have to wait for other updates to be available and possibly installed before the new ones will be offered.

I will check and see if there is a difference in what happens using the different (or same) options.

I just checked the WindowsUpdate.log after doing the search using the App and the Desktop utilities. Other than a difference in the GUID of the Caller and another ID= number, the basic steps appear to be the same.

I leave my settings on Download but don't install. I like to see what is being installed in case something like Bing or some device driver sneaks in.
