Yesterday, while using File Explorer a problem occurred. I had a CD open showing files on the CD and I had a folder open (that is on my desktop) and was copying files from the CD to the desktop folder. I am not sure what I may have done, but after closing the File Explorer, it is no longer working correctly. When I left click on the folder icon on the taskbar on my desktop nothing is shown on my desktop. The taskbar icon shows that File Explorer is open and if I hover my cursor over it, a 'mini' is shown (just above the taskbar) of what is open, but will not expand to view on the desktop, just shows the 'open' page above the taskbar. If I open WORD or some other program and try to 'saveas' the files are shown and I can save the document. I down loaded a "file manager" from the Microsoft Store so I can get at and work with files, but I am not able to use the Win 8 File Explorer.
I have done a normal shutdown and restart, but still have the problem.
I tried to do a system restore, but the restore would not complete. (suggested I turn off antivirus).
Does any one have any thoughts on how to fix this??

Did you do the OTA Windows 8.1 update? Those have a high degree of messing up your system, check in the Tutorials Section for the DISM command and it's switches and arguments, run that, it should fix you up. Oops, someone beat me to that suggestion - Use Caperjack's Link.

If a DISM doesn't work, then you'll have to run an In-Place Install, you'll have to obtain in Install DVD or ISO image, which you can either Burn to Disk or move to USB Flash drive. Contact whoever made your machine to get the disk. In-Place Install is easy, just stick the disk in the drive, run SETUP, and choose "Upgrade" which will re-install your OS leaving all of your Programs and files.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I ran DISM and it found and corrected corrupted files. Then I ran SFC and it ran to completion with no errors. I did a re-boot and crossed my fingers. Same condition still exists. File Explorer does not open to a full screen (or partial screen). It shows as 'overlays' on the task bar icon. If I hover the mouse the miniature images that should open show correctly, but they will not expand to a usable window. Win 8.1 seems to be working fine except for this PROBLEM. Is there a way to just re-install just the 'File Explorer' and leave the rest of Win 8.1 Update Update operating as it is without a re-install of 8.1 , 8.1 Update and the Update to the 8.1 Update?

I don't understand how this happened, but I will explain what I did. As I indicated on my last post, even after I ran all of the suggested procedures DISM and then SFC -- File Explorer was still not working correctly. I was trying to get a remote connection to work for my Win 8.1 desktop by using Team Viewer. I installed it on both my Win 8.1 PC and on my iPad. I connected using Team Viewer from my iPad to my Win 8.1 PC and started MS Word, Excel, Outlook (email) to see how everything worked. It was fine and I tried opening File Explorer in my PC from my iPad. It opened and worked successfully much to my surprise. I then went to the room where my PC is and saw that File Explorer was opened. Using my mouse (on my PC) is closed File Explorer and re-opened several other folders. All worked. I then closed the remote connection and tried again and File Explorer continued to work correctly.
After a couple of re-boots it is still operating as it should. I know it was not working correctly until I did the remote connection, but I don't understand why after connecting through Team Viewer, File Explorer seems to now be fixed. I am going to Mark this issue as closed. If anyone has an explanation as to why this is now functioning correctly, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks for all of the suggestions and assistance in working through this issue.
