Disk jumping all over the place, 100% most of time

This is a brand new HP envy-17 laptop, 16gb ram, intel i-7 2.4ghz, 1tb harddrive and a gtx 740 graphic card.

im talking 4 days old but for some reason things are running very slow, lags a lot and opening any program immediately has a 1-2 second lag. all i have done so far are removing a bunch of the crappy apps like ebay, win 8 games, ping, HP camera and other bloating software as well as installing a few basic things like itunes, photoshop and norton.

when i open task manager i see the disk running at 100% nearly all the time even though all i have opened are chrome and steam. its the same thing with whatever else i am running, the software often utilizes nothing more than 5-10mb/s but it would be red warning at 100% disk usage. if i close everything, except chrome as i am googling for results, it would stay at 100% for a bit then start jumping erratically. sometimes 3%, some times 50%, then 100%, then back to 0 constantly.

i've updated all windows updates (it does this before and after), ive updated all drivers, i have tried customizing the virtual memory setting, i have tried disabling everything manually down to the bare minimal i need to run things and it still does this.

what can i do? i want to save factory reset as my last resort. please help!

You can have a look at this Process Explorer

It could be a service. (Indexing for example runs on a new PC for a long time).

You mean when running the optimise option? Which pass does it get to? Let it run overnight with nothing else running but if I run defrag it takes more than an hour especially if I'm doing something else. You could have a problem with your disk but chkdsk takes hours also so lets not try that yet.

EDIT - you could check the disk tab on "Resource Monitor" also from the task manager. It should tell you what process is using the disk - task manager doesn't show everything on the default view. You can see everything (services etc) in details tab but you'd have to select the IO.
