Tweaking Windows 8 to behave closer to Win7

Aside from 3rd party software that restores the classic start button and desktop (startisback, etc), is there a way to disable background tasks/services associated to Metro? Thanks

    Hi there.
Why not install Windows 8.1 update 1 -- it boots directly to desktop and you don't really ever need to EVEN see the metro stuff.

While you don't have the classic menu back (yet) you can create a very useable menu using a custom toolbar and by pinning your common applications to the quick launch taskbar or even the desktop then you've got an almost windows 7 like system but with the added extra security and performance of the newer OS.

To pin programs to the desktop -- open the file location of the program and then right mouse click ==>send to desktop (create short cut). It's not obviously clear in W8 how to send programs to the desktop but that's how to do it for ANY executable program / application.

    Cheers

Hi jimbo and thanks for your reply. Yes, I know everything you mention, what I mean is that if I'm not going to use the metro stuff then I can disable its associated processes (via services or startup items) in order to optimize memory/cpu/disk usage. If so, it'd be nice to know which services/processes can be disabled.

Metro is now an integral part of the OS. You will not be able to totally disable it but you can follow Jimbo's advice and look here for other optimization techniques:

Also, if you use an SSD, there are plenty of "SSD specific" optimization tutorials available via Google.
