. . .agree with Dude. Now if you have VMWare Workstation or VirutalBox (both are for creating VMs; you could create a VM of Windows 8.1 and test it that way to see if it is something you would really like to use as an OS. VirtualBox is a Free application. . .Good luck either way. . .

Just bite the bullet and go for 8.1, sooner or later you'll have to get into that environment, so better to start with it now. just make sure you have all the drivers right for it. With the newest iteration of 8.1 you will not have too much interaction with Start, aka Metro, Modern UI, if you don't want to. Apart from Start button menu (that can be easily replaced too ) if you can't get used to "new way" everything else will look like W7 but work better.

Sick with 7. It's a fat more better OS and is matures, no quirck.

windows 8, 8.1, 8.1 update, all have their quircks

I'm tired of typing it over, but they're a lot!

The only reason I use 8 is because to install Windows 7 on my laptop, I would have to enable CMS and disable secure boot and fast boot. Now when I do that, for some reason, the laptop just feels sluggish. Not to mention the fact that ASUS doesn't provide official drivers for my model, so I am dommed with 8 and will not buy a new laptop anymore until a new decent OS comes out so I can get it bundled with the new OS

I prefer 8.x, performance is just better. Faster boots and shut downs. I don't use any of the new UI stuff, so that doesn't bother me at all. I also love the embedded keys in the Bios. No typing them in, no activation issues. It just works.
