    Lets start with Skydrive

    Hi All,

I'm sure you get lots of people coming here desperate after installing win 8 so I'll try to keep it relatively brief. This site has come up a number of times in my google searches so I thought it would be a good place to sign up.

I've been building machines for 20 years, which usually involves a clean install on a new machine, stripping that to an absolute minimum for my needs and then carefully installing drivers and software.

I got my first laptop yesterday, which came with an oem version of win 8 64 (home or whatever they're calling the consumer version). As I'm sure you can appreciate it was an absolute nightmare. I felt like the guy in one of those 'dad tests' even though I'm pretty tech savvy.

I'm a power user and like to set things up and be able to access things which win 8 wants to hide from people.

First I had to install over a hundred updates, then 3.6gb of win 8.1 which took hours, I some how figured out how to get to the windows update section. It was a living nightmare pretty much.

After installing classic shell I had some semblance of normality. I right clicked all the tiles I could and uninstalled the apps, used ccleaner to reduce startup load etc.
Something I CANNOT get rid of is skydrive, despite uninstalling it it's still running in the processes section. I'd like to completely eradicate it from my machine. I don't want to hide it, I'd like it gone.

That's pretty much the theme for my experience with win 8 so far, it's impossible to find things and when you do things aren't actually gone. There's many other things I'd like to address but lets start with this one

There's a lot of helpful people on here from what I've seen so hopefully someone can help me out, thanks in advance.

Hello GraphicDesign, and welcome to Eight Forums.

SkyDrive will now be called OneDrive after you have updated to Windows 8.1 Update via Windows Update.

If you like, the tutorial below can help show you how to disable SkyDrive/OneDrive integration to no longer have it.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the link and the registry entry, I got stuck at the gpedit.msc stage because the home version doesn't have that.

You're a legend for all the time it must take to make all this info available. Win 7 was so customizable and win 8 is less so (at least on the surface).
The good news is I feel like I'm winning the battle a bit more today and made some good progress overnight.

The next couple of things on my list are removing the email address from my sign in/username because I used some profane language in protest at HAVING to enter some details in order to create a profile so it's probably not ideal if '' comes up every time I log in. I have managed to change my username online (the only way to change it from what I can tell) but there doesn't seem to be any setting to display email address.
The other one was the mousepad area dedicated to bringing up the charm bar. I'm sure there's a keyboard shortcut for that I can learn so it could be disabled altogether rather that trying to reduce the active edge area.

You seem like a bit of a genius when it comes to win8 so I'm sure you'll have the perfect answer.

    Thanks again.

    Glad that could help.

You could use the tutorial below to disable edge swipes for your touchpad.
I'm not sure what can be done about the email address showing other than switching to a local account. However, a local account will not be able to use any modern apps (ex: OneDrive, Mail, etc...) that use a Microsoft service.
If you like, you could also set Windows to require user to enter both a user name (email address) and password to not see the email address.

you can add and remove accounts in settings /users, you can create a new Microsoft account that you could add it via the charms bar, setting ,acct, and add it ,then when you boot the you will get the choice of 2 accts ,now that much i just did on my computer ,iam assuming i could now deleted my old acct ,but im sure i will loose all my apps and setting ,so that as far as i can go with trying this ,but at least i could get rid of an account i no longer want to use . so you can change it but it will be a new and you would have to install the apps over again ,and it might be wise to back up data and other files before you try it

It's not required that you enter an Microsoft email address. You can enter anything that looks like an email address, and then when it fails click the link that you want to use a local account.

Using local accounts, however, won't be able to use most modern apps, which may not be a big deal for many people. Just something to be aware of.
