8.1 metro won't print but works perfect in desktop

This happens on 3 machines I own.

Using win 8 I could see all my printers under metro but when I select one (say from iexplorer) I get "there was a problem connection to the printer." I get this no matter what I select, printers, Adobe Pro Creator, Microsoft XPS creator...

When I use Desktop, PERFECT.

When I updated to 8.1 it all started working! Then one day mysteriously stopped on all machines.

8.1 update did not resolve it.

Any and all help would be appreciated. Microsoft support spent 3 hours trying to figure it out and refunded my money

There are issues with Metro that no one can figure out. That is why most of us stay in the Desktop mode. As for the rep at MS. Those are Tier I, or low level reps. You may have to send an email about the issue to the engineers at Redmond.

Hello, mtollin. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

What exactly did Microsoft support say? Did they do this remotely on your desktop?

What brands and models PC and printer do you have? Is the printer wired or WiFi?

Did you contact your PC OEM or printer manufacturer?

Simply not true. Most here do not stay on the desktop. We use Store apps all the time.

It’s been three hours since the OP has been looking for an answer to your suggestion on emailing. Why don’t you follow up on it?

I am not in here all of the time. I only check the site once or twice a day. As for using Metro apps. I set my son up with Metro Mix from Stardock Software, when I purchased Start8 for him. He has no problems using it to run Metro apps inside the Desktop.

I would say that 99% of the time. He is using Desktop mode to use Google Docs, for writing school papers.

If it weren't for Metro apps, I'd be stuck using Camcard solely on my phone. that program is a godsend. I take pictures of the cards on the phone. when I need to do changes to many cards, I use my PC through the Windows 8/RT version. the cross-platform compatibility with iOS and Android is fantastic.

That program alone justifies Metro apps. It's also my preferred CBR and PDF reader (flicking to change the pages is great). It's my preferred way for a newsreader. there's no good desktop equivalent to Skitch. there's no good desktop equivalent to Trackage. I prefer the Facebook app over the browser version. I like the Metro version of theCHIVE over the browser version.

They remoted in then gave up. Suggested reinstall on all 4 machines! All 4 are different. An Asus tablet, a dell portege, samsung, and a lenova yoga2 pro. None work. They let me choose devices, printer, then show available choices. They are all listed but won't connect. Again works perfect in desktop on all 4 and they were working after original 8.1 update. I use metro a lot. Easier when in tablet mode for casual entertainment, particularly on my yoga2

Seems to me the odds on all 4 systems being flawed is pretty high. Greater odds it's network configuration or printer driver.

You may want to ask questions in those categories.

Please, I don't need to be addressed. I could give two flying colors about your systems. It's the OP that asked an important question in need and you have yet again not answered.

We're off topic and I beg the pardon of the OP for doing so.

Thanks again. :)

Not familiar with iOS. I'm retired construction that ran a building business with Windows OSs. Having much more time with this lifelong interest. Looked into Macs at one time, but too expensive, even as a tax writeoff.

If it's much like Mac OS, then so be it. A much better system IMO. I guess I was curious enough to learn the Modern/Metro so I kept going even though frustrated at times. Actually the included MS and Bing apps were horrible at first, but with time and updates they are quite good and efficient to use. I like how they work in conjunction of each other along with Charms bars. I can obtain, save, and send (Share) data faster than this old "Desktopper" could have even gotten the gun out of the holster. :D

I have recently read posts by Mac users that have crossed over to Windows. You've enlightened me more about what they mean, so a thank you goes to you, caperjack! :)

That's exactly why I think it's a windows issue. All drivers work perfect in desktop and can't be network since I can be off line and get the same error if I print to Microsoft xps creator or adobe creator. I even plugged the printer into USB an get same message. How does one get above level 1 support?

Ok. I understand now. It must be Modern/Metro and networking. Have you tried taking all but one machine offline just to experiment if works with just one? I have no problems with it with single machine.

Don't know how to contact MS that way. You may want to PM an MVP on here to get that answer.
