    Back or not?

I upgraded the laptop from 7 to 8 then 8.1 and at first it was good being both fast and I could run it in 7 style (Stardock) but just lately it has become very finicky not remembering password's. the wifi dropping out randomly, and one feature I do not like is having to go to the 8 PDF opening app to look at documents sent through in that format.
I have run every malware I can think of used SFC and chkdsk plus CCleaner to sort it out to no avail.

Is this normal behavior for 8 because if so I shall revert back to 7 as I am getting pretty tired of it spoiling my computing.

I don't have any of your problems, I don't think Microsoft make problems in their OS of and pass it off as normal. You said it started out fast, you were happy, now you have issues. You basically answered your own question, its not normal. Perhaps some software you have installed since upgrading has caused some of the issues that you haven't really been specific about.

As for the PDF. Download acrobat reader, go into Default programs and make it the default for reading pdf files.

Well I am only running programs I ran in 7 as I do mostly run of the mill stuff forums emails Google searches etc so it is hard to pin down anything in particular.

The PDF stuff I bring up the file say from an email and it opens at the bottom of the screen with a message asking me if I want to open it a that and on ok it goes to a metro screen that opens it ok but then the tedious WIN + X to get back to desktop. I will have a look at setting that as you say.

Yeah I don't like the Metro reader either.
If you click Win key + S and type in "Default Programs" click on it, you should be able to tell the PC that you want PDF files to open with Adobe Reader instead. I must admit, pdf's run a little weird on my version of 8.1 also. I have told default programs that I want Adobe Acrobat Pro to open all PDF's, but for some annoying reason they still open with Adobe Reader.

At least its not metro reader I suppose

    Hi there
W8.1 update 1 for me is better than W7 in almost every way --I still need W7 for access to things like SAPGUI for corporate applications - and of course accessing the works VPN doesn't yet work with W8.1 !!!

I have no interest whatsoever in "Metro apps" and with W8.1 it's possible NEVER to see them -- and you can remove the stupid store app from the taskbar in the usual way of course.

W8.1 update 1 opens directly to the desktop -- previous versions of W8.1 you had to customize it and in W8.0 wasn't possible.

For PDF files in "Desktop" mode just download the ADOBE Reader -- free - still works as it always did and no adware in it either.

    Cheers

Well yes an no ants[pants I didn't get enough time to sort what was what to use as the default.

Jimbo the email link for example just goes straight to "what do you want to open this with". Now as my 7 settings went across with the upgrade I naturally took it would just open with the Reader but it flips to the one embedded in 8.1. Now while that is ok there is no back button to take me back to the desktop (and my email list) a leaving me to WIN + X to to do that and I find especially is people send through PDF stuff - of which I not a fan it does get rather tedious at times.

There are other things that irritate as my wifi connection dropping out for no reason whereas before it was there a s long as I anted it. Like I said I have run all the scans I can poke at it but it seems to have a mind of it's own. At least 7 was simple to use and maybe there is some sadistic programmer working for Microsoft employed especially to annoy the living dickens out of folks like me

One example is why did they have to change the Control Panel?? it beats my reasoning.
Anyway I shall run it a little longer and then make up my mind f it doesn't get any better I will slip the cloned 7 drive back in.

Oh like backup and restore it now has File options and the msconfig the Start up tab has some rubbish about task manager - just little irritations like that and I just don't see why they changed them.

Other things like if I am trying to helping out on the 7 forum I don't have access to snips of 7 stuff with 8.

I do like the speed and Stardock . What they will do when 9 hits the shelves is going to be interesting but for the moment 7 has the edge on 8 for me
