How to change the look of the .htm file icon?

My htm/html files saved on the desktop in Windows 8 looked like this:

Now when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 they look like this:

How can I return their previous look?

PS. I went as far as tried to see if there's anything mixed up in the registry and here's what I got:

    Hello DC,

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg files for the listed .html and .htm options in the tutorial below to restore their default associations and icons.

    Hope this helps,

Hmm. Thanks. I just downloaded and ran both .html and .htm reg files, then rebooted but the icon still looks blank.

In that case, check to make sure that Internet Explorer is set as your default program using the "Set this program as default" option to have all if it's associations checked.

If the icon still doesn't display properly afterwards, see if rebuilding the icon cache may help if it may be corrupted.

@Brink: Thanks. The funny thing is that if I don't set IE as a default program, it works. For instance, if I make Chrome open html files, the icon starts looking like Chrome:

It is only if I right-click it, then choose "Open with", then "Choose default program" and pick IE from the list, as such:

It reverts the icon back to this blank look.

I also tried clearing the icon cache:

and then rebooting but that doesn't do anything.

    It drives me nuts...

In that case, you could also do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo it.

No, I don't think restoring will help. I installed Windows like 2 days ago.

Something tells me that this is probably how IE wants html documents to look like. (It may be with their new "flat" look.)

Was it like that after installing Windows?

This is the way an .html file should look with IE as it's default program.

It looked like that in Windows 8. I now run 8.1. Do you also have 8.1 installed on your end? If so, does yours look like that blue "e"?

Yep, it's that way in all editions of Windows by default.

Other than a system restore, you could see if running a sfc /scannow command may help if it's a corrupted or modified system file at fault.
