Additional codecs needed to play .mpg files?

Hello,
When I try playing .mpg files with WMP, I get sound, but no picture. When I try playing them with VLC Media Player, they play fine for about 20-30 seconds and then either freeze or the picture just goes away. Upgraded to WIN8.1. I read that a codec may be needed. Where's a safe place to get one? Which one? Thanks.

I always go for the Mega pack. It covers all sorts of audio and video files.

Use VLC. Codec packs can be a horror in your system.

But if you absolutely need codecs, get them from Shark007. This man knows what he is doing.

Something sounds wrong with the files. The question is. Can you play the .mpg files back okay on a gaming machine (ie place them on a USB stick and play back). Are these music files that were pulled off as Torrents, or from CD's?

Did you do these .mpg's or did someone else?

Really sounds like a file issue, not an issue with codecs.

Nah, Windows does have problems with MP4 files. In Windows 7, the WMP crashes and the Movie Maker cannot deal with them either. In 8.1 I get the video but no sound. The 8.1 Video app, however, plays it correctly. But the best bet is VLC. There you have no problems at all because VLC brings it's own codecs - and a lot of them.

In that case you are right. If it freezes even with VLC, the file is bad.

But both Windows 7 and Windows 8 WMPs do have MP4 problems - at least in my systems.

I never had issues with either 7 or 8, when playing mpeg's in WMP. The OP has a bad file issue. The curiosity in me is thinking that they are from Torrents.

Sometimes you can fix mpg with the old VcdGear program. Check the fix box and just input to output. I forget if you have to change the input file extension. Another trick uses the old TMPGEnc freeware version. In the File menu use MPeg Tools to demux the mpeg. Then just mux the files back to mpeg system file. Just doing that has fixed quite a few files that would not play or convert for me.
