From my authored social.technet post: Update 1 - Cannot close Metro App and Stay in Metro UI
(Using a non touchscreen Laptop)

...."Whereas before (Update) I could go to the Metro UI start a metro program, then suspend it by dragging the window to the bottom of the screen, and then I would return to the Metro UI start screen.
"Now if I go to Metro, run a metro app, then close the app, I get kicked back to the traditional desktop.
The behavior before Update 1 was such that I could stay in Metro after closing a Metro app. Now no matter what I do, including unchecking the "when I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of start" in the taskbar properties, I get kicked back to the desktop."

....Answer by a reader:
I found the fix after suffering from the same problem. If you check "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar", when you close a modern app, you will always return to the desktop, regardless of whether you have "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" checked or not. Uncheck the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" and then it will work as you expect.

....Answer by Microsoft:

...Closing app behavior is determined by both "Boot to desktop" and "Modern app & taskbar" settings

...As we designed Windows 8.1 Update, we wanted to introduce a number of changes for mouse and keyboard users that would help them use and switch between Windows Store apps alongside their familiar desktop applications. A lot of these changes only made sense when combined together, so they are toggled by one setting, which is “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar.” This is usually enabled together with the first setting as a complimentary set of improvements for desktop users.

....A little more rant from me:

Regardless, there should be no mystery here regarding explicit choices with checkboxes, the way Microsoft has chosen to word these options. This is a function of the English language.
If "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen , go to the Desktop instead of Start" is unchecked, when in the (Metro) Start Screen, closing a Metro app should leave you in the Metro(Start) UI, no matter what.
The above behavior should have no dependencies on the checkbox "Show Windows Store Apps on the taskbar", as there is nothing that would lead any normal human to guess, infer or even suspect such a thing, not to mention that it makes no logical sense whatsoever.
Further, when "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar", is unchecked, the Windows Store Icon should DISAPPEAR from the desktop taskbar, that would be clearly inferred. Unchecking this checkbox leaves the Windows Store Icon on the desktop taskbar.

It is just for reading purposes in case anyone else has this issue or can't understand why unchecking "When I login..." doesn't do what it is supposed to do.
I guess this is more an issue for people who have keyboards, mice and non touch screens that maybe dock a hybrid with external monitors.

For me, I really feel like once I'm in the Modern UI or in the traditional desktop, I generally want to stay and return to the same environment after closing an app, unless I explicitly choose to go to the other interface.

I don't have a problem in that at least there is a workaround to get close to the old behavior.

I do have a problem with how they seem to justify that they had to combine these two checkboxes in the way they did, and how it seems to me that it would be impossible to guess to use the "Show the Windows store app" checkbox to fix what the other checkbox does not do.

I know what you're talking about. I too have that problem, even after unchecking the Windows Store box. Now what?
