In Windows 8 when I hold down the windows key it opens a search thing, I find this very annoying... is there any way to disable this? I can't seem to be able to find any way to do so.
Why do find it annoying? Do you keep pressing the button by mistake for some reason? Without squeezing some glue under the key I can't think of a particular solution I'm afraid.
Sometimes I press it, hesitate and change my mind. On previous versions of Windows, when I let go it just opens the start menu so I just press it again to close it. On Windows 8 it shows the search thing, so pressing win key again closes the search and opens the start menu, so I have to press it again to close it. Not to mention the big magnifying glass icon pops up in the middle of the screen and blocks out whatever I'm looking at.
Win Key + W opens search
Win Key + F opens search
Win Key + S opens search
Winkey unless otherwise specified opens or closes the start screen.
What keyboard do you have and does it have software? Like logitech and GKey software? Are you using any stardock software? Using any other customization software?

Win Key + W opens search in the Settings category
Win Key + F opens search Files category
Win Key + S opens search Everywhere category. This key combo has always opened search on the Start Menu in past OSs as long as I can remember. They added WinKey/Q for 8/8.1 specific OS key combo, although it’s Apps category in 8 and Everywhere category or within the open app (if the app supports app search) in 8.1.
Holding down the WinKey doesn’t open search for me either. I’ll give it odds it’s OEM specific or other software as antspants is inquiring so.
Okay well this is BS, I went to take a screenshot and holding down the windows key didn't do anything (it's on an old laptop from 2011 that I hardly use). I'll post again if it happens.
