slow loading of explorer file lists

    Win 81. 64 16Gb RAM

When an application lets me browse a folder to find a file, the window it opens always displays files in name order even though the sort by date column is set in Explorer. Eventually (ofter after two minutes!) the display rearranges itself into date order. Related is this:

Just using Windows and changing drives in Explorer there is a considerable lag either before the folder opens, or the folder opens empty and a progress bar c r a w l s along the address bar.

I have five hard drives and many folders have have sub folders with many files in each. So I know there are a lot of files to manage. But it seems as if Windows isn't prefetching or caching or something and is starting from scratch every time. Once windows has opened a folder, surely it should remember, even after a power-off?

Are you trying to access network shares? If it is an issue of just the computer itself. The question is, how many files & folders are in those folders you are trying to access.

Do you allow Windows to turn off you hard drives? I do and I know that slows things down a lot.

Thanks for the replies. The drives are all in one standalone computer. Windows doesn't make it easy to analyze the number of folders and files in each but as an example, on one drive is 16 root level folders and one of those folders has 54 subfolders each containing a few dozen files. Typical of the whole drive, so quite a load. But they are 2 Tb drives and are all only half full. Windows seems to struggle with this.

Is the answer to strip out a couple of drives and prune the remainder? Sounds ridiculous to me. Would Linux cope better?

Again, it really depends on how many files are in the folders. Even Linux takes a long time to load folders with tens of thousands of files in them.

I'm sure that's right. I am going to search for some utility that will analyse my drives and report on numbers of files and folders. I may need to subdivide further. But it makes a nonsense of having 2Tb drives doesn't it?

Give this a try, may have something to do with the problem: Thumbnail Cache - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

There are two other thumbnail settings you could enable in Group Policy as well.

Thank you, I checked and there was a thumbnail db cache set up but to be sure I downloaded the reg file to enable it too and will see if it helps.

My problem is, when i am on an application that would require me to explore files, only icons are displayed and not the thumbnails.
But when I open file thru file explorer, there is no problem, the thumbnails show up.

Thanks in advance for the assistance

I can't help, but it sounds like the same issue. Applications opening an Explorer window are not picking up configuration data? But who's error is that??

Hi folks I’m not a fan of “Paint” within Windows 8.1, so hadn’t really used it until yesterday. I noted that when I loaded a file and clicked the “save as” option, each of the file format options (png, jpg, bmp etc) produces a filename box with a drop-down arrow that then displays a short list...
