Mystery Error Code on ShutDown

Darn right! Too much crap ware out there. Most of the problems I work on any more are malware related and mostly from bundled crap ware from supposedly good sites like cnet.com, which site should be deleted from the internet.

So, I guess it found some corruptions, which I'm going to look for now, just to see what they were.

I had checked the logs before I ran DISM.

Although it said "component store corruption was repaired", when I checked the logs after running DISM, I didn't find anything new and everything was the same as before I ran it.

    It does fix things.

I usually run sfc & then dism & then sfc again just to be sure things are fixed.

    I do this regularly.

I figure it helps keeping small problems from becoming big problems.

I always go to majorgeeks.com for downloads, unless I can find it directly from the source.

I went to the site and since my computer's not crashing or having BSODs, I'm wondering why I would need it. The only thing I've seen is the mystery error on shutdown, which isn't anywhere near a crash.

In fact, I haven't seen the mystery error since I ran sfc /scannow. And I ran DISM, which didn't show anything new in the logs; I'm going to wait for David to look at my screen shot of the log and if he doesn't see anything, I'll mark this puppy solved.

Unless you think there may be a reason I should run Who Crashed.

You stated that there was an error and the system did not let you see it. That would be a BSOD. Who Crashed goes through the Dump logs and shows you what the issues are, that are causing system problems.

Of course your issue can be tied to the problems that Dism is finding. I would still run Who Crashed, to see if it finds anything else. As a Automotive mechanic has various tools in their toolbox to fix vehicles. Think of the various tools that we point out or use for diagnostics, are what we have in our personal toolbox.

You can make up a USB PE drive, that will let you check things out offline. When you start running into issues like you have. It is better to salvage what you can, and start looking more deeply at possible hardware causes.

Sorry, but I have never heard anything but the "blue screen of death" associated with BSOD. I've run Windows from the DOS days to Windows 3.0 to Windows 7 and have encountered the BSOD many times; not so much with Windows 7, though, as Microsoft pretty much got it right by then. In fact, I don't remember ever having a BSOD in Windows 7.

That said, I decided to go ahead and run Who Crashed. The Results are that nothing was found, so whether I needed to run it or not, it didn't find anything wrong with my computer.

I'm pretty much convinced that sfc /scannow took care of things because the error on shutdown disappeared. I ran DISM just in case, and it didn't find anything either.

All of this just to get things in order for an upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro, which I might clean install. Haven't made up my mind yet. I cogitate awhile before making any changes, hoping to get it right the first time.
