Hi,

I have a Samsung NC10 Netbook which runs Windows XP. Now I wish to update it to a newer OS. Will the Windows 8 or 8.1 run on this Netbook. I know there is an issues with screen size, but you can change this with a Downscaling. I will not be using the Metro tiles - I will go directly to Desktop and work from there. I have seen on youtube that some have installed it and it seems to work - but is it recommendable or shall I just update to the "old" Windows 7.

Please let me have your somments, thanks

It is a standard NC10 but upgraded to 2 GB ram.

You would be better to just run Windows 7 on it, or Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. That computer will be a dog, running Windows 8.x.

Actually I find the contrary. I have an extra gig of RAM and Windows 7 was a dog on my NC10 but Windows 8.1 flies. I can Downscale anytime I wish to use a metro app. Mine boots straight to the desktop and with an installed start menu its fabulous - a new lease of life. It feels much perkier than it ever was on XP.

Older topic, but will chime in. IMO, some netbooks (with min 2GB) may be worth a w8 shot and see how it behaves. I've got w8.1.1 on a 2009 Compaq mini, N270, works perfect, and feels fast enough, just don't ask it to do more than 1 or 2 things at the time, not because of ram (2GB is fine for web browsing, email, basic photoediting etc.) but the processor + disk transfer can be clogging up with a backlog of work to do!

I ended up installing windows 8.1. and I agree it is fast and works perfectly. My NC10 is like a new pc :)

How did you manage to get Win8.1 to install in the end?
I'm trying to install via bootable USB but it returns the following error message:

Recover

Your PC needs to be repaired

This 64-bit application couldn't load because your PC doesn't have a 64-bit processor. If you're using Windows To Go, make sure your USB device has a version of Windows that's compatible with the PC you're trying to use.

File: \winows\system32\boot\winload.exe
Error Code: 0x000035a

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Is the issue that I still have the original WinXP installed?
How do I progress beyond this message?

Only options I then have available are:
Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings

I created a Win 8.1 cd and installed from an external drive. But you can't use a x64 media as the Netbook is x32.
