    video opens in full screen

Win8, running on desktop, no touchscreen.

In Win8, I opened for the first time a video, with the video app.

It opens in full, maximized screen.

In Win7, for example, when opening a video (with WMV) the usual minimize, maximize/adjust size buttons appear in the upper right corner of the active window.

I want to be able to click on, with my mouse, the maximize button (wherever it is) and adjust the size of my active window.

How do I do this in Windows 8?

    Hi,
Open the video file not with "Video" app but with "Windows Media Player"

    Hope that helps.

Interesting. Yes, that works. So, clicking to open sends it to the video app, which I don't seem to have much control over.

To change that I need to reassign the default video player to wmp or whatever I want.

If you know, What is the video app -- and what is it used for?

    1. If you want to get out of the full screen (which is standard with these tablet apps), press ALT+F4

    2. Change the default associations to play all video filetypes with another player - WMP, VLC or whatever. Those tablet apps are a pain on the desktop.

The video app is used for playing videos. It is mainly intended for use on tablets with touchscreens, but the app can be still used on desktops, although some might feel uncomfortable doing so.

thank you. Yes, it seems these apps are a real pain on a desktop. I don't understand what MS is doing. I need to run a desktop for power for business programs. Does that mean the home PC as we know it, that could be used for business is essentially dead for MS purposes?
Thanks for the answers. Thanks for the help.

The desktop is not dead - not yet. But it has been degraded to an application in a tablet world. But if I read the signs correctly, M$ is currently back-paddling. They are learning in homeopathic doses though.

Yep. I think they've realized the almighty mistake they made with 8. From what I've read, 8.1 has gone someway to readdressing the balance - although to my mind they've got quite a way to yet.

I'm very nervous about getting 8.1 in case it undoes all the settings I've spent ages sorting out!

I wish they'd sort out the inactive windows border theme though. That's really bugging me .

Not only will you need 8.1 but also 8.1.1 - else you will no more get any updates, security and others.

Yes, I read that somewhere. I'll make a note of all I've done, before installing the updates so I can wiz through checking and putting all the settings/programs back in one go. Better that, than doing things as you go and being distracted whilst trying to do something important.

What about the appearance of inactive windows - can you change those in 8.1?
