Windows Explorer not finding files. Need alternative!

I am having great difficulty searching within Windows Explorer. The windows explorer search is basically useless as it almost never finds the files I am looking for and will not accept wild card!

Also I do not like the search charm as it just shows the files without the details like folder location etc. I need to right click on each individual file to see its location. This is primitive to say the least especially when the search brings up many results. I have thousands of files. Right clicking on each file to see its location is tedious.

I desperately need a replacement for Windows Explorer with a search that is comparable to the search in Win XP Windows Explorer.

Please help as I am totally frustrated!

What is the problem with the search facility. Mine seems to accept wild cards?

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
I use wild cards and it does not find files I know are there. For example when I use *.avi it does not return a search for all my avi files. Somehow Win 7 and Win 8 don't like people not using generic folders to save their files. My win 8.1.1 is far from the OS I expected. After the win 7 let down I was very disappointed with win 8. What I like about Win 8 is the fast boot time. 7 took 3.5 minutes to boot. There are other things I like about 8. By the way I use Classic Shell on both my 7 and 8 machines. I could not use those OS's otherwise.

My main peeve with both OS's is the search function and with 8 the faded pastel colours that make seeing the slide bar almost impossible.

Just tired a "wild search for *.pdf and then *.avi Both of these I have mainly in customised folders in a separate partition. It found them all.

Have you customised the search, in the "charms" bar, to look for "everything"

NOt sure what you mean about the pastel colours. Do you have a screenshot?

Fwiw. I have used "everything", in the past, as suggested by Count Mike. Brilliant and fast.
