Hi, the disk management tool on my windows doesn't move on and hangs at "connecting to virtual disk service" forever: Untitled.jpg

My HP desktop is new, windows 8.1, hard drive having ample space. I searched the web and tried, but to no avail. Any idea? Or where can I download a free windows disk management tool to fix the issue? Thank you.

Hi invincible,

Since it is a brand new rig and I'm assuming you have done nothing of significance to drastically alter the OS, I would first contact the HP support group for assistance because there may be more corruption yet to be found. However, if you would like to try and fix it before doing so, you can try these 2 commands from an elevated command prompt:

sfc /scannow (this will take a while)

If errors are report run this next command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If DISM reports success, try opening Disk Management again.

Good luck,

Thanks for your reply. I had upgraded from win8 to win8.1. In fact, I had tried scan before posting the question. The window disappeared and nothing went on after the verification finished 100%. Weird. I have tried your approach again, but failed. I download the patch the other gentleman mentioned, and will report in another post. Thanks anyway.

Thanks. Yes, I tried again just now with your batch file, but the same result. It is too troublesome. I will recover the system from the recovery partition, I feel.

Thanks again for your kindness.

Yes.
Doing recovery would be best.

If sfc & dism fail, something is seriously wrong. :(

Yes, I did a refresh of the system to restore it. Ok now. That is faster than trying to find a problem, regrettably. Thanks a lot, anyway.
