What's up with Google these days

Hi there
Google seems to be getting more and more USELESS these days

I am messing around with a DEBIAN 7.4 ("Wheezy") system at the moment and forgot the command to show all the hardware the system thinks I've got on my system (rather like Device manager in Windows). It's not difficult but if you don't use the commands regularly it's easy to forget.

So I Googled "Show INSTALLED" Hardware -- yet all Google returns are things about INSTALLING.

A lot of searches now seem to be getting worse on Google these days -- More ads appearing too.

Have others noticed this too.

Cheers
jimbo

Google are doing lots of changes at the moment (search seems to be getting more integrated with G+ and personalised searches)

Do you have a button near the top right for a toggle of personalised results (doesn't make much difference for me but you could try toggling it to off)

There are a lot of complaints on the google forums about recent changes to many of there products, I am slowly moving away from google because of recent changes

When I have this problem, I put quotes around the word in question or even around the phrase, such as "show installed hardware". Generally works.

Computer came with Windows 8.1 OEM.
I found removing the word "installed" worked. So search for "Debian Wheezy Show Hardware".

Not answering your question of course. I suppose Google are trying to be clever and second guess us. Often that works when I spell something wrong.

Maybe not here.....yet.....but in some circles Google is viewed as the next Big Brother, wanting to take over the world. :)

It's been reported that they are gathering huge amounts of data on those who use their products like the Google search engine.

You can erase all the traces of your browsing history from your own computer, but you can't erase it from the Google archives.
It's there for whichever of the ABC boys that want to view it. :(

Therefore, I'm in favor of a more Private Search engine..... like, ixQuick.com
I've been using that for a while now and I really like it.

Cheers Mates!

You can erase all the traces of your browsing history from your own computer, but you can't erase it from the Google archives.

Are you saying that is the case if you are signed into Google? What if you aren't signed into Google?

I'm signed out of Google all the time. I sign into Google only when I need to check Gmail. After checking mail I immediately sign out.

YouTube was fine until they added Google Plus.
Now you have to setup Google Plus just to post a comment on YouTube.

I've found myself using bing lately more than google. Due to the reasons mentioned here. I bookmarked the ixquick.com and will try that one and compare.
