Solved Managing Windows

I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP a week ago and have not found the differences too difficult.

However, I have fiddling about for hours trying to find a way to have more than one window to view.

What I am trying to do is view my electric/gas & at same time I have my excel spreadsheet open on top, so I can input figures. In XP I was able to to do this.

In Windows 8, I seem to be permanently in full screen view & keep losing previous windows and I do not have tabs in the task bar or anything else to say what is open. Have I missed some setting?

I am sure I have missed something obvious and hope someone can point me direction of controlling the windows.

Thank you

Hexie

If I understand what you mean, grab the page from the top, hold it and move it to one side of the screen, itll split the screen. Is that what you're after? Make sure you have both apps maximized first so it shares

Yes it is anspants. But we do not know how it will be compared to Modern Mix. As for the OP, it sounds like they are working in the Metro window, not actually in the desktop.

Update 1 will let you pin Metro apps to the taskbar. You also get a taskbar under open Metro Apps. It auto hides though so you have to mouse down to see it. I'm guessing the OP may be in the modern version of IE and that's causing some confusion. hexie press and hold the Alt key and then press the Tab key and see if that helps with selecting what you want open on screen.

I can snap a Metro App and a desktop program on the same screen but I'm not sure it you need update 1 to do that. It's not something I do very often, if at all. I usually dedicate one of my 3 monitors just to Metro Apps.

Hi All,

Thank you for all the tips I have grasped the general concept now.

What confused me was that I downloaded my gas/electric bill in pdf form & this was opened by a program named Reader which came with Windows 8. When the pdf opened with that you can view but it will not let you grab it, change size , move it other than from max full screen to tiny - too small to read.

I have not yet installed Adobe or indeed any programs other than Norton Internet Security as I am pondering on whether to do the upgrade to 8.1 and will wait and see what 8.1 update 1 brings in a couple of weeks.

I can move some other windows about & re-size etc. as you suggest but this Reader program has a will of it's own.

Thanks for the guidance, much appreciated.

Hexie

Reader is a Metro App, it runs full screen or in snap mode. In snap mode it will be just split screen vertically to 1/3 or 1/2 the screen. You can't resize metro Apps like you can desktop programs. Not yet anyway. The alternative is to install the free Adobe Reader and set it as the default program for PDF files. Once opened in that you can resize the window the way you want.

You are failing to see the important note in this sentence. Hexie does not have 8.1. You cannot do 1/2 screen with Metro apps in 8.1 only on the side. I suggest you upgrade to 8.1 immediately. You get more functionality and it certainly doesn't break anything. Plus you will have the side by side feature (in fact can move the snap anywhere on the window (including snapping more windows than 2)).

You can avoid 8.1 if you wish by going into Control Panel and find "Default Programs". You can then change what program opens a PDF if you prefer to stay in the desktop. In the desktop you do have the ability to snap windows side by side by dragging it to one side enough until it snaps half screen.

I hope this helps.

Welcome to Windows NineForums, hexie.

I upgraded to Windows 8 from XP a week ago and have not found the differences too difficult.

Wow! And I mean wow! There may be others, but you are a first I have read that has ever stated that. Moving from XP to 8 is quite a jump. Taking it graciously without complaining is a first for me! :thumb:

Below is a screenshot showing that a Store app can be snapped next to multiple Desktop Win32 apps in 8.1 on a 19" monitor anyway. That is a PDF opened in Reader Store app to the right next to IE11 and a Word doc (that I'm writing this in) opened on the Desktop app.

Screenshot (65).png

If you’re enjoying 8 and considering moving to 8.1, which is what I would advise, I would do it soon. There's some changes such as better Start Screen modification, some combo key changes, better snapping configurations, which is better in 8.1 IMO, and a whole lot more. There are more configuration settings such as booting to the Desktop app instead of the Start Screen. Here is a link to the tutorial if you decide to update: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/32995-windows-8-1-update-windows-8-a.html

Good luck to you and again welcome. :)
