Or switch to Desktop mode with Classic Shell or Start8 from Stardock.

Thanks for the guidance, much appreciated.

You are failing to see the important note in this sentence. Hexie does not have 8.1. You cannot do 1/2 screen with Metro apps in 8.1 only on the side. I suggest you upgrade to 8.1 immediately. You get more functionality and it certainly doesn't break anything. Plus you will have the side by side feature (in fact can move the snap anywhere on the window (including snapping more windows than 2)).

You can avoid 8.1 if you wish by going into Control Panel and find "Default Programs". You can then change what program opens a PDF if you prefer to stay in the desktop. In the desktop you do have the ability to snap windows side by side by dragging it to one side enough until it snaps half screen.

    I hope this helps.

Wow! And I mean wow! There may be others, but you are a first I have read that has ever stated that. Moving from XP to 8 is quite a jump. Taking it graciously without complaining is a first for me!

Below is a screenshot showing that a Store app can be snapped next to multiple Desktop Win32 apps in 8.1 on a 19" monitor anyway. That is a PDF opened in Reader Store app to the right next to IE11 and a Word doc (that I'm writing this in) opened on the Desktop app.

If you’re enjoying 8 and considering moving to 8.1, which is what I would advise, I would do it soon. There's some changes such as better Start Screen modification, some combo key changes, better snapping configurations, which is better in 8.1 IMO, and a whole lot more. There are more configuration settings such as booting to the Desktop app instead of the Start Screen. Here is a link to the tutorial if you decide to update: Windows 8.1 - Update to from Windows 8

Good luck to you and again welcome.
