Solved Not getting into desktop from my start screen

When I am in my start screen and I touch my desktop tile to get into my desktop I don't get into it. I either get into IE or into the last website I have been in and not closed. Can I sort this out?

Hello Nougart,

It sounds like you may have had Internet Explorer opened to full screen. If so, then you are actually going to the desktop, but with IE opened full screen. See if pressing F11 to toggle IE back to normal mode will allow you to see the desktop and taskbar.

Hi Shawn, I have found that the only way I can get back to Desktop when on another website is to close all tabs.

Try Alt - Tab, one of the thumbnails should be your desktop with no open programs.

Nougart,

Do you see the taskbar at the bottom of the screen after you click on the Desktop tile on Start?

Are you able to "restore down" or drag the borders of the Internet Explorer window to be smaller to see the desktop behind it?

As a test, press the :winkey: + D keys to see it that will take you to the desktop.

Say, I am on this forum and I want to go back to my desktop, if I don't close the current tab (for this forum) and close all tabs when I go back to my start screen for my desktopI will come back to this forum instead of going into desktop. If all my tabs are closed and I want to go into desktop from my start screen I go straight into desktop. I have now put all the apps that I would probably need to use in my Taskbar so I can just click on them and not need to go back to Desktop. Sorry Shawn that I didn't explain myself properly. :eek:

Are you wanting to go back to the desktop or your Metro Start screen? You mention both and I'm confused on that at the moment. For most of us here the desktop is the NON Metro side of Windows 8. Just your taskbar and desktop wallpaper. The Start Screen is the Metro side of things.


For me if I'm in a Metro App and click the Desktop Tile on the Start Menu, the Metro App minimizes and goes out of site. Any desktop programs I had open stay open. For me that's usually the desktop version of IE and Outlook. If I want to clear my desktop of open programs I can mouse to the lower right corner of the taskbar and click the display desktop button. That will minimize all open programs.

No problem. I understood you, but was just trying to figure out if it was only Internet Explorer at full screen or maximized, and just on top of the desktop since it is maximized.

This would cause you to see only Internet Explorer anytime you clicked on Desktop from Start.

Are you able to drag the borders of Internet Explorer to make it's window smaller to see the desktop?

When you go back to the desktop from the start screen whatever desktop program that was running will still be running. If you want to see the desktop go to the lower right corner and right click then click show desktop.

Just did this and got a little menu with show the desktop, touched it and hey presto got back in desktop. Thanks :dinesh:
