I have installed Windows 8.1 64 bit on a new motherboard using a Logitech K120 keyboard. After using the system for a few weeks I have decide to put on a better keyboard. After swapping keyboards the system runs fine until I reboot. At that time Windows starts up as if it has never run before giving the "Hi" and "Adding applications" messages and then going to the normal tiles screen but it can find no applications. Rebooting give the same results. If I change the keyboard back and reboot, everything comes up fine.
I have tried 3 different keyboards, 2 different Microsoft and 1 Dell, with the same results. As far as I can tell, Windows 8 only works with the keyboard that was used to install it and can never be changed. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to look for a solution?
The only software running was Start8 to actually make Win8 useful but I removed that and confirm that the problem still existed without it.
I doubt this but I saw it with a battery driver lenovo provided on my notebook when I upgraded to pro, did any of those key boards install a driver? I had installed a driver for my battery power management and it broke the reboot process, once I removed it reboot went to normal. Also when doing updates have you seen any hardware updates slip through?
Windows always goes and hunts for drivers for every keyboard and mouse I have ever plugged in in Windows 7 so I assume that Win 8 does the same. How can you prevent it from reloading the driver the next time it get's plugged in? I use the same keyboard, mouse and monitor for multiple computers so this happens often.
Still, I will check it out tonight and see what I can find. Do keyboard drivers show up in the same place as normal applications (control panel/programs) for uninstall or do you have to go to device manager to do this? I've never had to delete a hardware driver. Update, yes but not remove.
I also found a motherboard update to the BIOS for my processor so I will try that today. Windows 8 has been such a train wreck that reinstalling Windows 7 is looking better all the time. Still, I do like the faster boot and shut down times.
I've swapped keyboards in 8 and 8.1 and never had that problem. I have a custom gaming keyboard that is USB that I plug in and run along side my regular wireless keyboard. Other than the gaming keyboard, all my keyboards and trackballs are Logitech. I wish I could be of more help. I don't know what's going on with your system, but I don't think that's normal. A keyboard swap shouldn't do that.
You can find all your drivers under C:> Drivers, though I don't think key board and mouse drivers are stored there so maybe someone else would know. That is where I went to remove the battery power management driver. That update might fix it too, let us know the progress.
Sounds like HAL is messed up. The other is that possibly your USB driver got some how messed up. Was this a fresh install of Windows 8.x, or a pre-existing install when you swapped motherboards?
If it was a pre-existing install of Windows 8.x on the Hard Drive, that could be your problem right there, why you are having the keyboard issues.
This is a fresh install on a new motherboard with all the latest ASUS drivers installed. I never keep anything from an old install. That is always asking for wierd quirks. This is the third fresh install as a matter of fact. Tried the latest BIOS update and another unrelated update with no improvement. I also deleted all the drivers loaded for the keyboard, also with no effect. I assume this is an odd problem otherwise I would see a number of postings in the forums and couldn't find anyone else reporting this problem. By the way, Windows 8 completely crashed a few minutes into testing last night (third time in 3 weeks). I didn't bother to reload it.
I have a fresh install of Windows 7 currently running. I will make sure everyting is updated tonight and rerun the same tests. I will update this posting tonight when I get an answer if the problem is Windows 8 or some other cause.
My laptop and two desktops are ASUS, only the laptop is UEFI. I've swapped keyboards and trackballs/mice on all of them at one time or another with no issues. They are all mostly wireless now with the Unifying receivers. Might I ask where you obtained your install media?
I am not sure what install media you are referring to but all Asus drivers came directly from the latest set on the Asus support site for my motherboard, the keyboard drivers were what Windows 8 installed when the keyboard was plugged in, and the Windows 8 DVD came from Microsoft.
The simple answer is as I thought. Windows 8 is not ready for prime time. It has completely crashed my drives three times and has shown several minor instabilities over the three weeks I have struggled to make it work reliably on this new motherboard. I installed Windows 7 and the machine is up and running flawlessly. Now in all fairness it has only been 24 hours so the real results will be if it is still performing well over the next few weeks. If the situation changes I will update this post but otherwise it is safe to say I not be using Windows 8 anytime in the near future. It is not as stable or reliable as Windows 7 and that is the name of the game. Fast boot times don't help if you must reload your operating system every couple of weeks.
It was the Windows 8 Install media that I was asking about. You got it from Microsoft so it should be fine. People with factory OEM installs will sometimes source their media from "other sources" so they can do a clean install. That media can end up being modified of corrupted. If you downloaded it from Microsoft you may want to download a new copy just to make sure it wasn't a corrupted download. If it's a physical disk just make sure it isn't scratched or smudged.
