Sony Vaio - Automatic Repair loop & no product key!

Hi

Working as a Mainframe programmer, I am automatically assumed to be an expert in all things IT and so a friend of the family has passed me a laptop to repair:think:

What we have is the common Automatic Repair loop. The computer restarts, states "Preparing Automatic Repair" and "Diagnosis..." etc etc, and then does it all again. I cant get to the recovery menu or bios having tried different combinations of Shift F8, F12, F2.

All the help I have found so far recommends booting from disk. Unfortunately, the owner of the laptop has no manual or box or any record whatsoever of the product key.

The laptop came with windows 8 preinstalled.

I have tried to boot from a Windows 7 DVD, but it does not appear to be recognised and continues to do the automatic repair loop.

Any ideas?

Welcome to EightForums

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

information   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

no..this isnt my laptop.

unfortunately, the owner of the laptop did not bother creating a recovery disk either.

could the only solution be to buy a full copy of windows 8 and try booting from that?

Is this x64 8.0 ?

You should be able to get the product key from the firmware using rweverything from bootable media.

I think sony recovery partition has some weird split wim format that is difficult to apply using normal methods.

Your best bet is to get the key as above, then hunt around for 8.1 install media. Install it using the 8.1 generic key, then after installation, activate with the 8.0 key you got from firmware.

Might be core or core single language on that machine.Once you have the key, you can find out what it is using pidgen

i think you may have misunderstood the issue.

current position is, i am getting the automactic repair loop. i can use the Assist key to get to the menu which allows me to select start with bootable media, bios, recovery etc but when i select bootable media I just get "operating system" not found.

there isnt any way for me to get that VBS script on to the laptop which has the issue

No safe mode ?
No command prompt?
You're in a pickle then.

Get recovery DVDs from manufacturer. :)

You will probably need something efi bootable with rweverything on it.

Have you access to another machine running 8.1 ?

In the middle of d/l ing something, so can't boot into 8.1 to make one for you just yet.

If you are stuck, will do it a bit later.
