It looks like HP has this 500-056 Desktop locked up tighter than a drum! I've been working all morning to be able to use sfc /scannow; however, so far, I haven't been successful.

When I try to "Manage" my computer, nothing will happen. I have myself set up as Admin, but I still don't seem to be able to perform Admin things.

I'm at my wits' end.

If you can download this batch file, it runs sfc & dism & sfc again.

Unblock it if needed.{right click/Properties/Unblock}

Right click it & click Run as administrator.

View attachment Repair.bat

If you can't run it as Administrator, create a desktop shortcut & in Advanced Properties check the box to run the shortcut as administrator.

Run Davids bat first... he is faster at typing than me. Look into the UAC though and see if this is your problem if it doesn't work.

Thanks, David and Adam!

I have just now managed to get back into my regular login so I could read your messages . . .

I really don't believe all that I've just been through! I clicked the back arrow at login and then clicked on Administrator. Got a blank window and eventually, got the Administrator window. However, nothing would work no matter how I clicked . . . Click, Right Click, Double Click, everything was just frozen!

I did a hard shutdown and then pressed the power button to restart, hoping I would get a choice of login; nope, nada, no way, no how! I got the same as above and everything was still frozen once the Administrator window showed up. Another hard shutdown.

I pressed the power button to restart, got to the blank screen and decided to "wait for it, wait for it". It was time for lunch so I asked Hubs if he wanted to go get Mexican food, which he's always up for.

When we got back, thankfully, I must have given the Administrator time to get his ducks in a row; I managed to get back to my normal non-Admin startup.

Whew!

Now I will investigate the advice youse guys gave me. But first, I think I will try to restore the system to this morning before I tried to create an Admin account.

Thanks again!

Can't you press Winkey+X and get the "Admin Command Prompt" window? You should be able to do that...

If you can't - I'd find your Install Media, and try to re-install Windows 8, see what happens. I tried it with my Main PC, and it FAILED, when it got to copying the files, it gave a a huge error that said I had to install updates, and then it crashed the install process. If your system does that, you';ll have to install a fresh copy of 8/8.1 nd then move your personal effects out of the OLD folder...

Hope ya don't have to though...

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I think I will try to restore the system to this morning before I tried to create an Admin account.
That sound like a very good idea :)
I enabled my Admin account because of Shawn (so I could adopt authority from it). I'm not certain if it is the best thing to do yet. I haven't decided.

Moot point, Xwe! I just spent hours (it seems) updating to Windows 8.1 through the store and now everything seems to be OK. I also spent a little time updating my system info. Thought I'd done that, but must not have clicked on "Save" cuz I couldn't see no steenkin' HP info.

Right now, all I want to do is (if it's still there) get rid of my messed up attempt to create an Admin account.

My excuse is that I've been so busy doing research on a massive lawsuit that I've had no real time to figure out how Windows 8 actually works. I learned how to get around in it (mostly) and that's all.

One good thing is that all the great advice I've gotten from y'all will go into my Troubleshooting Notebook! :dinesh:
