Bottom line: When they designed Windows 8, they forgot the desktop user. And that's why nobody wants it. Now they want to pacify us with tidbits but it ain't gonna work. A tablet OS will not fly on a desktop.

    Hey Wolfgang,

They didn't forget the desktop folks since the desktop is in Windows 8 just like it was in Windows 7.

In Windows 8/8.1, you just have the modern UI added to have both a modern UI and desktop mode now.

It's not going to be available through Windows Update until April 8th 2014.

Yeah, the modern UI, the full screen apps, the charms that pop up, the corners that do things, etc. - all that stuff has to be removed for the desktop user. Who needs it.

I use W8.1 on my tablet and W8 on the phone. And there it is perfect. But on the desktop I will not use it. If they don't clearly seperate desktop edition and tablet edition, I will stay on 7 or use Mint.

Then such a user that only wants the desktop should stick with Windows 7.

I'm just saying that Windows 8 and 8.1 has a desktop just as functional as Windows 7 is if they would like to also have the modern UI.

i agree that the desktop users should stay with 7 but try and buy a new laptop with 7 very hard to find, and how long before they drop support for 7, 2 or 3 years?

It's not hard to only use the desktop in Windows 8.1 if one chooses as well though, so it's really nothing to worry about.

It's all about options, and the option to not use the options you don't want to use.

That is because 8.1 Update 1 will not be released to consumers until April.

Shawn, we have no disagreement. My point is simply that the 8 systems were designed from the wrong end for the desktop users that have no touch. I have 3 desktops and 4 laptops without touch and I can find absolutely no justification to dish out a lot of money to upgrade to 8.1.

Even if I tuned it with all the tricks that we know, there is just not enough additional desirable function to spend any maney. And the performance point is pretty moot for me because all my systems run from SSDs.

The 8.1 that I run with VMware Player on my desktops from the external SSD is very interesting as a study object and to help me answer questions on the 8-forums. But I would not like to run my daily operations on it.

Don't forget that I have been implementing, designing and managing operatng systems for 35 years. I know very well that MS could have clearly seperated the desktop and the tablets. But they wanted to push a 'strategy' rather than make their customers happy. I have seen that before - it never worked.

I don't disagree with that mate, but I just wanted to point out that what you posted below wasn't true. That's all.
